More before and after images from the NYT:

Utterly astonishing.

the water rises so high!

damage aftermath
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hj58NpanX3g

it's going to take years to clean it all up and rebuild.
when I was on Phi Phi island in thailand, they were still doing cleanup and rebuilding.

its crazy that the death toll seems so low so far. i guess its because they have good and proper early warning systems. thailand had none. there were a couple thousand killed just on phi phi island alone.

So much footage to view!

All of it un-freaking-real. So much to take in. So much devastation. It's those before-and-after photos that really drive it home. 8O

Thanks to all who have spent the time posting links in this thread and other threads. It's been easier to come in here after work (been working the last few days) and check these links than to go through individual news sites to see updates.

I'm still waiting for further news on someone I know somewhere in the middle of it who survived the initial quake (he sent an email from his phone just after the original quake) but no word on whereabouts or well-being since. Hoping for the best and that once he's able he can contact someone back home here.

The images are simply stupefying to watch. Some of those towns, all that remains of them are points on a map at this point. This was a Gotterdamerung.
