This has nothing to do with the hit by Chara but there's one way I think to at least reduce the number of concussions. The NHL sped up the game in an attempt to produce more scoring. (You know, those Americans aren't excited by sports that involve ties and low scores). Bring back the pick and the 2 line offside and you'll slow the game down somewhat.

To ryan29: The rules are fine. The problem is there's no consistency in handing out punishments for these types of hits. Forget looking at things on a case by case basis. Have a minimum set number of games that a player is suspended for if they deliver a hit to the head, and apply it across the board whether it's Matt Cooke or Steve Stampkos.

scarecrowe scarecrowe:
The NHL allowed 13 year old Brittanie Cecil to die before they put up a mesh to help prevent pucks entering the crowd. If the political system we have was as in China; how many heads would have rolled; literally?

The NHL is an abusive organization not worthy of any sympathy.

Of fucking spare me please. There have been 2 fan deaths caused by pucks at NHL games between 1978 and 2004. And the one you mentioned was the first spectator death in 85 years of NHL hockey.
Compare that to the 5 spectators killed by baseballs at MLB games over the same period of time.

Compare BOTH of those to the 118 fans killed at auto racing events since 1955.
But yeah, the NHL is the abusive one

Fans sitting along the 1st or 3rd base line were/are far more likely to suffer injury or death from a hot one. You figure that a baseball generally leaves a bat at the same speed a puck leaves a hockey stick after a slap shot.
There have even been major injuries due to broken bats hitting fans as well. As well of deaths from before the 1978-2004 study.

Absolutely unacceptable attitude, Mary Bettman.

If someone's life can be saved at little cost then perhaps it should but for those who are beyond all hope.

That explains the Physics, but not the people getting hit by the only thing in the game worth watching.

It's not MY attitude moron. It's your attitude that the NHL is an abusive organization you should worry about. I called you on it, and you had nothing in return. Sadly, it took one death for the NHL to institute netting and taller glass in all areans.
Now though, you rarely hear about a fan getting plunked by the puck anymore. And with the positioning of the higher glass and the netting, fans seated around the ends of the arena are FAR less likely to get hit by a hot one.
Line drive foul balls and debris from racing accidents are still injuring people on a fairly regular basis.
Frankly, when it comes to fan safety, the NHL is head and shoulders above MLB and pretty much any racing organization.
Wanna make hockey 100% safe for the fans? It's easy. Make the players play in an empty arena and if you want to watch the game, you can ppv it. Then you can say good-bye to the sport as revenues dwindle, unless everyone is willing to pay $200 or more per game they watch on TV.
If you wanna talk about the real assholes, how about the minor leagues (AHL, etc)that still took a few years to learn what the NHL already figured out. After Cecil's death, there were 2 or 3 more puck-related deaths at minor league venues. One in Manitoba and another in Spokane. Can't remember where the 3rd one was, if there was a third.

OMG a golden one form the team at the center of the hockey universe got hurt.
Go ahead. Pussify the game even more. Then you'll be screwed.
The Sedins will be good for 500 points. Each, if nobody's allowed to hit them.

Your attitude and the NHL's are very obviously obtuse. The NHL let the defenseless girl die BEFORE they did anything. That attitude is obnoxious, abnormal and requires severe adjustment. Get it?
