The Swiss do what the US just jabbers about. They have a well trained militia. Funny how the 2nd Amendment solutioners never bring up the well trained part.

But let them do what they want, just keep that poison from seeping over the border.

Yes, we do.

The National Rifle Association's 'Eddie the Eagle' program teaches firearms safety to young children even in anti-gun communities. The program is deceptively simple and teaches the kids that if they find a gun, don't touch it and to go tell an adult. Period.

No politics, no indoctrination, no scare tactics.

And the NRA offers firearms training classes to all comers and especially law enforcement.

Anyone wanting firearms training can often find it for free via the NRA. That's part of what my Life Membership money supports.

But from my understanding, in some states, you can purchase a firearm just by giving your ID. There's also some background checks for felonies. But, that is not training.

Agreed. The Swiss have made their "Gun Culture" much more focused on Duty rather than Right. The difference is subtle, but seems to make a huge difference in outcome.

That's because the technology the police use to conduct a check on you during a traffic stop is also accessible to the staff at gun shops. If you pass an instant background check then why do you need to wait to complete your purchase?

There's ALWAYS a background check for felonies when buying from a FFL dealer. Certain transactions, like from father to son, are exempt as they should be.

True. Training is not required because gun ownership is a right. Just the same as voting is a right and the literacy tests that some states used to require as a condition of suffrage were banned so have training requirements for gun purchases.

Consequently, people like the National Rifle Association offer training to interested gun owners.

I understand that, your 2nd amendment. But, let's say that: would you be against a gun training course over a weekend before being able to purchase a firearm ? Do you think it's too intrusive ?

What's sad is that firearms training used to be common in schools all across the USA well into the late 1960's. The anti-gun crowd bitched and whined to get rid of those classes and now they oppose even teaching little kids not to touch a gun. Seriously.

(It's true! Fifty years ago a kid in the USA could get into trouble for NOT bringing his gun to school!)

They want total ignorance on guns because that will supposedly make kids safer.

For some reason, they have a totally different view on sex education.

The problem with training courses before anyone can own a gun is a constitutional one: there are no other such requirements for any other right given by the U.S. constitution. There are restrictions on where you can exercise those rights, such as a permit to hold a mass public rally in a city or to carry a gun within city limits. Yet the fundamental right itself cannot be legally infringed upon without good reason, such as no guns or voting rights for felons. The right belongs to the citizen unless the government has a very good reason to take it away, not granted to the citizen if the government approves.

Of course, a constitutional amendment could change this entirely. Heck, if two-thirds of Congress and three-fourths of the states agree, absolutely ANYTHING could happen in the good-old-US-of-A.
