I always thought the whole Gideon thing was a bit strange. I think I have been given four or five of them at one time or another and I have no clue where any of them are. Religion has no place in the seperate school system.

I won't get into the whole handing out bibles to kids debate except to say religion shouldn't be forced down anyone's throat.
I am generally pro-religion. However, the right place for religious education to occur is in homes, synagogues and churches, and not at public schools.

I am not against the Ten Commandments being posted at Courts since those are universal views of civilized people (or should be). Similarly, I am not against nativity scenes in village squares, even though I am Jewish, since Christmas is in effect and American or Canadian holiday. Courts, public buildings and most businesses are closed.

I do draw the line, though, at religion being part of the public educational process. It should have no role there.

Unless it's in a Catholic school. In Ontario we have a secular and a Catholic school system. The Gideons are not encouraged to go to Catholic schools.

Alberta has a Public and Catholic system, the Catholic system is the "seperate" one. So here religion has no place in the public system

As someone who went through the Seperate School system ie. Catholic, we were presented bibles by the Gideons. Things must have changed if the Gideon society is not welcome in Catholic schools.

Nothing has changed. My grand daughter got a Gideon in Gr. 3 and goes to a Catholic school.

I'm just going off my own left-footer experiences and I know that the school my kids go to doesn't distribute the Gideon version but one straight from the Irish Vatican.
