EyeBrock EyeBrock: ShepherdsDog ShepherdsDog: McCallum was/is a drunk....and an idiot to boot. Isn't being an idiot/drunk an advantage as an MP? Ottawa seems to be full of them. the core of the boil seems to be the senate.

Former Minister of Defence John McCallum didn't know the difference and this is the guy that accused our boys in Afghanistan of 'war crimes'. Don't forget this one. Can you spot what's wrong with this picture? ya his head is on backwards

Not to be outdone by a lowly minister, the Leader of the Opposition got his fuck ups in while ridiculing MacKay. $1: Shortly after, just across town, Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff made it a trio of blunders when he unwittingly replaced U.S. Defence Secretary Robert Gates with the head honcho of Microsoft.
"We think that Bill Gates, the secretary of defence, knows full well the problems with the F-35s," Ignatieff replied when asked a question about the fighter jet.
Ignatieff later used the same event to chide MacKay for his geography mistake.
"Well, I just think our minister of defence should get a map," the Liberal leader said.
"I think that would be helpful. We want to make sure that he knows about the great state of Washington, the great state of Oregon. Just take a look at the map next time. That would be helpful. It's a little embarrassing for Canada." http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2011/01/ ... eggar.htmlPot meet Kettle.

EyeBrock EyeBrock: Yea, bad move McKay.
But it's better than calling Vimy 'Vichy ridge'. Former Minister of Defence John McCallum didn't know the difference and this is the guy that accused our boys in Afghanistan of 'war crimes'. How did you get from McKay to the tired McCallum thing again? Do you think it's a good idea to hand over prisoners to someone who you know will torture them? "our boys" rightfully raised concerns about that happening and they were ignored. That's the implied war crime, and you know it. Or you should, we've discussed this millions of times already. Anyway... It would have made much more sense to attack Iggy for his comments about Bill Gates. Why bring up the false accusation against McCallum again? http://www.cbc.ca/canada/montreal/story/2011/01/27/canada-schwarzeneggar.html

Curt, you have a point but the allegations proved spurious. As in lacked foundation. Politicians better be right when they accuse our Forces in combat of war crimes. McCallum wasn't right and he should have shut up. False? $1: "McCallum: "I think the bigger weight is bread-and-butter issues, jobs and getting your children to school and all of those things. But I also think Canadians do care about democracy and about the high-handed, undemocratic attitude and actions of this government, and I think proroguing adds to the total character picture of Mr. Harper, and the fact that they may have been committing war crimes, handing over detainees knowing that they were very likely to be tortured, that is a war crime. And the fact that they're covering it up, I think many Canadians do care about those things as well as caring about economic issues." http://www.cbc.ca/politics/insidepoliti ... in-it.htmlIt's funny how we haven't heard from him since. Or any mention of the CF being complicit in war crimes.

False? $1: Meharchand: "And concerned about Afghanistan, which is what this first ad really deals with. If you had to weigh it, John, Afghanistan and issues there over human rights and torture, etcetera, versus jobs here at home, the economy, feeding your name, getting your kids to school, what's the bigger weight for Canadians?"
McCallum: "I think the bigger weight is bread-and-butter issues, jobs and getting your children to school and all of those things. And the fact that they're covering it up, I think many Canadians do care about those things as well as caring about economic issues."
Meharchand: "You know, we could digress here and talk about who's handing over, is it the Canadian soldiers who you're accusing of war crimes, is it the government, I don't want to go there in this interview."
McCallum: "It's the government."
http://www.cbc.ca/politics/insidepolitics/2010/01/the-wc-puddledid-mccallum-step-in-it.htmlHe was not talking about the soldiers, he was talking about the government and the failure to fix the detainee transfer agreement when soldiers began complaining of abuse. Its at best misleading to say that he was talking about soldiers. You have to avoid the context of the quote to see it that way.

I know he wasn't targeting the CF, he was looking to score points on Harper. But, Harper isn't handing over prisoners, our army is. So who is committing the alleged war crime?
Talk about collateral damage.
McCallum was a Defence Minister, he should have known better.
Come on Curt. I'm not going to defend the geographically challenged McKay, why defend that other idiot, McCallum?

Come on Curt. I'm not going to defend the geographically challenged McKay, why defend that other idiot, McCallum? I have no intention of defending him personally, I've never met the guy. He might very well be a schmuck, I don't know. It just seems like a strange grudge to hold on to. He wasn't talking about Harper specifically, he was talking about the defense minister being the one responsible to address complaints of abuse of transfered detainees. He was probably talking about Harper when he implied that they prorogued parliament to avoid coming clean about the detainee abuses. I don't think it's fair to say that he believes "our boys" committed war crimes, when he's specifically said that he doesn't.

Come on Curt. If McCallum was/is accusing the Harper government of war crimes, who is actually doing the handing over of prisoners? It 'aint Harper or McKay.
It's not a grudge either but if the Libs want to throw stones they need to be reminded that they also live in a glass-house.

martin14 martin14: At least McKay has an excuse No, sorry, he doesn't. Conservative he may be, but I've got to note that if you're in charge of a military you need to have a good sense of geography. Now maybe this was just a flub and he wasn't thinking...I'll allow for that. But to double down on a dumb comment...yeah, that's just making it worse.
