Not all Sikhs wear the Kirpan, only the very religious ones, we have many Sikhs here and I have yet to see one wearing it. And by the "hukum" with literally means order or comandment given by their 10th guru it is a defensive weapon more symbolic than anything else and literally a instrument of non violence according to the comandment.

So any Sikh religious enough to be wearing it believes it to be the instrument of non violence.

I don't think that is the point tho. THEY can think it is an instrument of non violence. I think the same about my bottle of water. Yet, I am not allowed to bring it on a plane.

That, and why would we make an exception for "the very religious ones"? If I can't bring my Swiss army knife...

Then, "it is not a weapon, it is a religious symbol" is all nice and dandy, but you can still hurt someone badly with it.

Ahhh yes, injustice all around becomes justice.

State and religion should be separated. Can't bring religion into parliament.

Just saying... a kirpan is still a weapon.
Now, if they carry the small decorative one that can be used, no problem.

That's what they were carrying.

Then I have no problem.

What don't you understand?

A kirpan is a knife! Though it wasn't designed, or intended to be used to perpetrate violence, it has been used thusly. Same goes for baseball bats, scissors, hockey sticks etc. etc. etc. None of which are allowed into such areas or as 'carry ons' either!
My Buddy Ranjit (Randy) wears a kirpan most of the time, but not in the swimming pool. It stays in his locker, but he takes his spiritual beliefs into the water with him! He says that " wearing a kirpan is a religious preference, not a religious law. Not wearing a kirpan won't make me any less of a Sikh, anymore than you wearing a little gold cross would make you more of a Christian. Lol"!

I don't have a problem with them being carried, as long as I don't get hassled for carrying a pocket knife.

Not more of this bullshit. We've had at las a couple of incidents of people being stabbed by kirpans. As well as tons of sectarian violence between Sikhs using other weapons. Sikhism is no more a religion of peace than Islam or Christianity.

One rule for all. Enough of this "you have a deep belief so it's OK for you but not the shmoe next to you" crap. If knives are banned, the kirpan is a knife, ban it too. If you want, make an exemption based on size - blade less that 1".

A baptised Sikh will always have a Kirpan, even if it's a really small one.

It looks like he is pandering to a Religious Multicultural group for votes. It might work.

It's a ceremonial dagger, like a sgian dubh. No more a weapon really than a Gerber multi-tool.

Way to hop on the bandwagon though.

I have a Leatherman actually. It';s a tool,. not a weapon, but I still dcabn't bring it on a plane or into many secure environments.

I'm with Quebec on this, though I admit to a prejudice against Sikhs. Separatist Sikhs perpetrated the biggest mass murder in Canadian history and then there's the murder of Tara Singh Hayer, the beating of former BC premier Ujjal Dosanjh, carrying large pictures of terrorists in their annual parade out here. I'm not really feeling over-inclined to accomodate them. Use a wooden facsimile of a kirpan, or something acceptable to security or stay out.

Yes, it the time to clean out the BS of Sectarian violence was passed a long time ago. Just about all religions say they are a religion of Peace, yet the slaughter of innocent people in the name of God is well documented.

Wearing a dagger as a symbol of non violence doesn't make any sense. Wearing a dagger in Parliament or the US Congress is WAY out of place. I don't care what your religious principle are. I don't care if its a Kirpan or a US Marine Corps K-Bar Combat knife. The law is the law.

Almost any object can be used as a weapon. This incident matters to me about as much as "how much the ocean would rise if I took a piss in it" when violence starts and you can not take care of yourself you have no one to blame but your self. You need to be aware of the fact that world is not was not and never will be a very safe place.
