MrC, you mark the cheapness of human life in most of the world as a black spot on society. It has nothing to do with society, it has only to do with our species and the fact that we are not as socially advanced as people would like to think. We act like any other species do and for the most part, very much like the rest of our mammalian brothers and sisters do. We see another member of our species dead, that's not our own family, and we act like a mammal. We look at it, smell the air, are thankful it's not us and continue on with our day. People in the "advanced" western world would act the exact same under the same conditions.
Don't throw this into the air as yet another social fault of human kind, it's just another animal on this planet acting like all other animals. We're not so far down the evolutionary path as we like to imagine ourselves to be.
