Aside from Robert Carlyle and the lieutenant with the awesome rack I never had too much interest in Universe. I don't know much about ScyFy in the US and really don't care, but Space here in Canada totally sucks as a channel. If they didn't have endless Star Trek and SG1 reruns to fall back on they wouldn't even exist. They seem adverse to running movies that aren't direct-to-DVD garbage, and they've picked that utterly horrible 'Todd And The Book Of Ultimate Evil' show as the program they're throwing most of their weight behind. And that nightly show featuring their on-air MuchMusic-y personalities almost makes me want to go out and start shooting random people.

If there's ever an award created for 'WORST. CHANNEL. EVAH!', Space definitely is in the running. Thank God for Telus TV so I don't even have to brush up against Space anymore.

Actually, the show performed better in Canada than in the States(albeit barely). Apparently, some felt that Tuesday nights on SyFy was better than Fridays but the move soon saw a plunge in numbers.

Space is superior to SciFi/SyFy. Wonder where Space gets those crappy movies from? SciFi/SyFy made them. At least Space shows some real Movies at least once a week, something SciFi/SyFy doesn't do. SciFi/SyFy now has Wrestling friday nights ffs.

ScyFy's still doing WWE NXT wrestling? I thought they dropped it a couple of months ago. Sad commentary on ScyFy that WWE ECW/NXT was still more popular than most of ScyFy's other programming.

Space is far too repetitive with the 'real' movies that they get (e.g. the Star Trek movie marathon that they seem to do at least twice a year), and it's not difficult for anyone to find the intact and uneditted movies somewhere else. They really need a major change in on-air philosophy because right now they're a far ways away from how good they used to be back in the Babylon5/Buffy/Angel/Voyager/Enterprise/BSG days of only a few years ago. If they knocked it off with all the trendoid tongue-in-cheek MuchMusic crowd vibe and actually showed the scifi genre some real respect, instead of borderline laughing at it all the time, they'd be doing themselves a major favour.

aaaah that's bad. it was not as good at the first stargate sg1 but it was good.

I think the problem was with the plot. it's not really going anywhere...

Really? I can't get into any of the SG series. For some reason they just look cheap? I just watch re-runs of Star Trek the Original Series, DS9 & TNG for my sci-fi kick.

Cheap ?? I'm quite sure those series cost a LOT of money. A new background everyone episode.

They are less serious than Star Trek. I know what you mean by "cheap" and they are, but they're also very deep in the sense that they make the story more believable by drawing from History. Unlike Star Trek series they also tell continuing storylines, coming back to previous(not always the previous episode)events/characters very often. I think you might enjoy it if you start from Season 1 Episode 1 and force yourself through at least the first half of that season. Then you can get a taste of what's good about the series. If you just watch some random episode you'll end up wondering what the hell is going on, because they'll be talking and following up about something that happened 6 episodes before.

Wouldn't hurt to watch the Stargate movie first. The series doesn't follow the movie exactly, such as what the Goa'uld was, but some characters are carried over and the series does assume that the Movies events occurred. Along with returning to that planet on occasion.

I took it to mean not very polished, minimal Special Effects(though that depends largely on the Episode), not as serious.

I'd say a worse channel is the History Channel here in Canada. Even though the CRTC made them stop showing CSI all the time, now it's nothing but shows about pawn shops, loggers, truckers, and soon rodeo cowboys.

It' has officially turned into the 'poor life choices' channel.

hehe. Those types of channels should be regulated to adhere to what they claim to be. I would love to have a channel dedicated to Historical exploration shows, but have heard about all this crap before buying the package that includes History. Discovery and National Geographic keep me satisfied there. Although my TV watching lately has mostly been News, Hockey, SG:U, with the occasional Daily Show/Colbert Report.

Yeah, they have to construct sets to look just like places all around Vancouver every week. That must cost a lot of money.

That's exactly what I meant, it wasn't a slight. I'm just unimpressed with the presentation of the show. There is something very Psy-Factor/Outer Limits/Space Ship Andromeda about the SG shows.

I watched the a few episodes (re-runs and a two-parter, I think) of SG:Atlantis about the Raith's being reverted to humans and then returning to Raith's. Its not a bad show but I find it really hard to get into.

Star Trek was by far no means a visual marvel, in fact any of the SG series have Star Trek Voyager beat hands down in terms of effects. Part of my problem is the casting at least with Atlantis, whether its Skinner from the X-Files or the Holographic Doctor from Voyager or MacGyver in SG1 I have a hard time seeing the characters and not the out of work actors.

However, when watching DS9 it doesn't take long to forget Captain Sisko is "Hawk" from a previous show. We might even be doing Patrick Stewart a disservice considering the caliber of actor he is by associating him with Picard. In other words in Star Trek the characters drove the show and made it believable and immersion (except the numerous Data & Worf episodes)this immersion was consistent.

I'm not sure if the SG shows just have a problem with the actors? Or the way they are written but I find it difficult to see real people as apposed to actors with guns and flight suites.

To each his own though, I could be totally wrong in everything I said.

I never cared for any of them until we started collecting the SG-1 DVD's. I disliked the characters at first. By about season 3 I was hooked and willing to place it in my all time favourite shows. Atlantis was great. I'm having a really hard time even paying attention to Universe though. I'll miss it only if they don't replace it with something new.

I picked up on SG-1 by season 3 myself and got hooked. I then watched the previous seasons and really enjoyed Atlantis. When they canned that for SGU I was really wary but gave it a chance and it was no where near as good as either SG-1 or Atlantis. I still like it and the writing and cast are good but they killed a great show for a gamble and it hasn't payed off and may have killed the franchise.
