Brenda Brenda:
As a quitter ( :P ) I can say that I didn't quit because of the warnings on the packages. I couldn't care less if they were on there or not.
Everybody knows what smoking does to a body. Smokers either don't care, or are in denial. A set of smoked up lungs on a package isn't going to change it, nor will a bunch of flowers make them realize they smell.

I think the indoor smoking bans combined with winter should be the most effective. Too f***ing cold to smoke outside. I was a smoker when the first non-picture ads came out, and when the 2nd generation ones with pictures came out, they got people talking about them. I don't think smokers even notice them anymore though.

It wasn't even illegal to sell cigarettes to minors when I started. They were $3 for 25. Now it's more like $13 or something, and there are big fines for selling to minors.

I think all of these things combined are why smoking rates are going down. The current warnings need a rotation though. There's a reason advertisers don't run the same ad for 15 years usually.

AS you may have heard, researchers in the US a couple of weeks ago successfully reversed aging in a mouse. Not stopped aging, but reversed it. It boggles the mind. WE're also making fantastic headway into an enormous number of diseases and conditions.

The upshot is that in a couple of generations, we may be looking at virtual immortality. Of course, that'll just create more stress on the environment, more conflict over resources and more Viagra sales.

What the government needs to do is start to promote smoking more, since we clearly can't afford to have people live for ever. We should also have government-run suicide clinics with incentives like "All the hookers and blow you can handle for your last night on Earth."

Fact is, that we need more serious policy discussions like this. Seriously.

Not for the "real die-hards" As long as they can light up, they don't give sh*t how cold or wet it is  It's actually funny how pathetic it is...

No labels. No warnings. Plain brown packages with only an A,B,C,D... etc.
You get to try 25 horrid brands before you find the one that used to be Players Light.

And you know what FUCKING STUPID?

The quit smoking aids have to be hidden too.
Dumb enough you go to the tobacconist in the mall and have to ask
Do you have X
no
Do you have Y
no
DO you have Z
no
...they can't fucking SHOW YOU
and staffed by a twenty-something who's too dumb to say 'We DO have, or will actually look, or can actually remember what he served 200 times in the last hour....

I'm not going to get into a 'pissing match' with anyone over the 'good, bad, or ugly' of smoking. So don't try!
I started smoking 47 years ago, when a pack of 25 cost 11 cents. I bought a carton the other day for $ 75.00. Such a deal! I've seen a lot of brands come along, and dissappear. I've seen the many design changes the manufacturers have made on packaging. I've seen all the 'scare packaging' curtesy of the govt. The anti-adverts don't work. (Do you honestly think that putting pics of diseased snatches on condom wrappers would deter someone from having sex??? ) But the govt and a few others want to be seen to be doing something!

But, but, but, but,................... they are doing something. :P

Collecting huge amounts of taxes from that which they claim to oppose.

You can't have it both ways boys, either make it illegal or STFU and let adults make their own choices.

I didn't quit because of the labels either. I quit because I was getting close to asthma. The labels meant nothing.
