Nope.

Unless it's for tax-purposes, of course...

There must be more to this judgement than we're seeing in this article. I agree that it could be a slippery slope, changing peoples will. I don't think it's black and white though.

Nope.

Don't get mixed up what's nice and what's legal.

The brother though, could have done the right thing by separating everything with his sisters. If the father was an ass, then it seems the son got a lot of those genes. :(

When my father died, he had no testament, so my sister and I refused the inheritance so that everything would go to our mother. No big deal, just the right thing to do, but we did have the legal right to accept it as is.

That is automatically the case in Holland. Unless you have a will. Some kids are just not that nice as you are, and leave the parent that is still alive with nothing.
So morally, it is the right thing to do, but legally there is no obligation. And I think that is wrong, and I also think that people should be saved from shit like that.

Then again, in this country of "fend for yourself and stop whining", I guess that when people don't think about making a will and get bitten in the ass because of it, it's "their own fault". They just shouldnt have been so stupid.

It's just that if the courts start getting mixed up in this, then people will just get around it by giving the money away while they're alive.

Everything that Brenda ( a European ) has been going on about is exactly why wills need to be respected.

Most Euro countries have automatic divisions for wills, limiting
the choice of people.

Bad idea.

ridiculous. the guy is dead and can't defend himself against what could be totally false claims by the daughters. so what if he was a jerk. the judge is saying that he was a mean guy, so the girls should get a cut. well, by that same measure: what if the girls were jerks too? what if they made him miserable and resentful? ..maybe his bad form was a reaction to their incessant bullshit and fragility..etc.. too many 'maybes' to justify the court getting mixed up in a private affair. i say bad decision, total b.s. :?

Much of what the Europeans come up with is generally a bad idea. Sadly, too many of them emigrate to Canada or the US to get away from that idiocy and then they agitate to make us look just like what they escaped.

Cool, Bart, point taken. Now stop bitching about gun-stuff in relation to Canada, healthcare, social systems and death penalty, mmmmkay?

Just fyi, not everything is good in Europe, nor is it in North America. The fact "you" can't see there is some good everywhere and we should learn from that shows ignorance. I guess it's bliss tho.

This is total BS, a will is a will, legal and binding. The fact that this judge did this is a joke. It is up to this man to dole out his money as he wanted, not up to some judge who doesn't know the whole story. I don't care if he was a huge dick to his daughters, that doesn't mean they are entitled to anything he doesn't want them to have.

I think it's disgusting that some pinhead judge can decide where a person's hard-earned money goes when they die when there is a legally binding will that already determines who gets what, if anything.
Quite frankly, no parent owes their kid(s) shit when they die.

Personally I think the idea of the Will is a obsolete concept. Something left over from the time of Monarchies and Paternalistic dominated families.

I'm not comfortable with it being determined solely by rigid Law, but don't think a Will needs to be held Sacred.
