Mr_Canada Mr_Canada:
Hopefully China is more/less willing to cut the umbilical cord sometime soon.

Unlikely. A united Korea is not in its interest as it will be dominated by the US and on its border.

This whole thing is wrong at every angle.

Something tells me that 2011 won't be a fun year.

One can pretty much say that about every year.

Things over here amongst the regular folks is still pretty day to day. I just had some parent's meeting and we got new students so no one is really too concerned just yet. But then hey, who knows.

So that's a hell of a lot easier problem to solve than most isn't it?
You lose some face, acknowledge China as King Shit in that area, Russia as Prince Diarrhea in that area, sign a paper that no US military presence or Korean offensive units north of the line.
Turn it into a free trade zone.
Almost 60 years of belligerence has got nowhere.

Mr_Canada Mr_Canada:
Not at all.

My suggestion was opposed when I 'called it', is all.

And I'll still stick with my thoughts that, paper or not, we will not be involved in fighting in Korea if it does escalate.

Let's try this scenario, just for giggles. :)

There are not enough South Korean and US troops to face off against the North.

Upon invasion, the use of tactical nukes will be authorized by Oboomba.

No involvement for Canada at all, except for the decontamination contracts. :P

The Yanks will never use nukes in a first strike. If N Korea uses nukes, I still can't see the US nuking N Korea.

While it may happen I doubt it.

As the article notes, both China and Russia have a veto in the Security Council and I'm sure one or both would use it to prevent UN intervention like back in 1950. What are the odds that both UN reps would be away on the day of such vote?

Nah, the Coalition had fewer troops than Saddam in Gulf War 1 and still whipped his ass.

Smart bombs, stealth and all the other high tech force multipliers the US could bring to bear would eliminate most of the North Korea's numerical advantage. And the South Korean military is far better equipped, supported, and trained than it was 50 years ago.

Odds are it would be a rout and China would step in to protect its interests - not wanting a rich, powerful democracy right on its border. I doubt China would fight us directly (after all, that would kill their economy and maybe even the Chinese Communist Party), but I could see them getting the UN and the rest of the world behind some sort of status quo non-solution.
