It won't lead to anything. Cheretien (as Indian Affairs minister) tried to make a massive change which was shot down by Trudeau because of the opposition from the Native industry. Nobody's been willing to touch it since. There's no upside for Harper, since the blow back would be so fierce. Most people have this idyllic view of natives as people of the earth. It's become a Canadian symbol, like the beaver, and we're not going to want to change that and look at the reality. And the natives as permanent victims industry is very very powerful.

But where is the outrage among (from? by? another one? ) the Natives then?

There hasn't bee so far. You don't think people notice that the chief and his friends and relatives live in nice houses and drive nice cars, while the rest live in decaying shacks with a rust heap out front. If they were truely upset, they would do something about it. But they just swallow the shit about the racist white man and keep quiet.

They're not all the same. Chief Clarence Louie of the Osoyoos band has made them very prosporous and shares the wealth. But here's the catch - you have to work for it, not just sit on your ass. I've seen clips of him at conventions giving the other natives hell. There's a few chiefs like him, but not enough. And of course he's still working from the racist basis of being a "nation" instead of just Canadian.
