No argument here. But the not withstanding clause is only available to provinces. So far, at least, reserves have not been given provincial status. Nunavut could conceivable use it if they become a province.

I agree with Affirmative Action in the USA for blacks. I agree for Affirmative Action in Canada for natives.

The rest of us will grind our way through.

In the both above cases, the white majority used legislation to suppress any political or economical activity of these groups, (especially with blacks in the USA), these historical imbalances WILL need to be addressed or one day when the native population grows to critical mass, they will simply take it (South Africa/Zimbabwe style).

I agree with everyone moving up through merit, but on the ground it's a different story.

I agree with you that the Charter, the way it is written now, is a perpetual piece of crap, but the fact remains you have to use something to make an impression on the Natives that they're Canadians just like the rest of us and by virtue of their heritage, skin colour and religious beliefs are not entitled to any special priviledges because of past injustices both percieved or real.

So, unless someone can come up with some better starting point to get that message across it seems to be the most viable method of breaking the stranglehold that keeps the reserves as private fifedoms of the band chiefs and councils.

Ironically, I've had to deal with the fact that my father was not Irish but was, instead, adopted from Spain...meaning I'm genetically 50% Spanish. I still think of myself as culturally Irish-American because, well, I am. Yet when I gave in and started noting I was Hispanic on my job applications, lo and behold, I landed a very secure plum job I'd literally been turned down for two years before.

Now that is a mix! Spanish-Irish! There are a few Italians in my family (Catholics abroad in heathen proddy England tended to stick together in the old days) and it's a good mix with the Irish.

I remember going to Spain on holiday and while we were at mass I was well impressed my Dad knew all the 'Spanish' words. It turned out to be Latin.....

Not surprising this is being done in Redmonton, but it wouldn't be out of place at all with the sort of geniuses that usually get elected in Vancouver, Winnipeg, or Toronto either. Actually, Calgary's about the only city in the entire country where the blood clots on council wouldn't try this sort of pandering ultra-leftist bullshit.

This is the problem when civic elections only get around a 20% voter turnout. The hardcore left always votes in huge numbers in civic elections and it enables them to claim power far in excess of their actual numbers. When they win braindead nonsense like this inevitably ensues. Any conservative or normal-minded folks in Edmonton should have gotten their asses out to vote three weeks ago in order to prevent this type of crap from happening. If they were just 'too busy' to take the fifteen minutes out to go to the voting booth then fuck 'em. It's their own damn fault for not giving enough of a shit when it actually mattered.

I was told by the cities of Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer, and Lethbridge that my application for employment as a firefighter was turned down due to being a white male. So these "anti-racist" pricks can go fornicate themselves.
