Freakinoldguy Freakinoldguy: I stand corrected and the website I found stating this is quite obviously wrong. But. as an aside, I'd like to complement you on your attempt to equate Louis Real to Remembrance Day. I would trade Louis Riel day for Remembrance Day. I was hoping to see some support for doing this here.

I'd have to guess that it was the Liberal party the removed Remembrance Day from our list of Stats.

But in these poltically correct times I doubt you're gonna make many inroads, but like I said before, good luck since it'd be nice to see.

Lemmy Lemmy: And Riel was a lunatic shit-disturber who was rightfully hanged. Reverence for Riel is a shared failure; equal parts revisionist history and outright ignorance.
Yep, yep and yep.

I take Remembrance Day off every year to attend the ceremony in downtown Toronto. If Nov.11 is to be made a holiday, what good can come of that unless enough peopl observe it properly. My guess is that a majority of people would treat it as just another extra day off.
If anything, have everything except essentials close on Nov.11 from say 10:30am-11:30 am so people can watch/listen to their local ceremony, or the national ceremony from Ottawa. Then re-open as normal after that.

Anything would be better than what we have now, where everyone is forced to have a day off without pay. Asking people to sacrifice income for Remembrance Day only makes people resentful instead.

Ok curt, I’m not looking for fight here. I just want to get my head around this.
People in Manitoba would rather celebrate Louis Reil than remember their dead from two world wars and on?
I understand you guys have a different view of Reil than some others may have, but to supplant Remembrance Day, I’m thinking you are out of step on this one. I note you posted the article on the ‘white poppy’, which started the whole annual fight-fest on the poppy. I’m seeing some issues against our Veterans here. Comment?

It was a PC decision by the knee dippers who run the province. Most Manitobans still view Riel as a shit disturber, who deserved to dance the hemp jig..

As always, I enjoy reading the comments here. It's rare that we agree about politics, and that's fine. I usually learn something from you guys when it comes to things relating to the military though. I really don't mean to be disrespectful about Remembrance Day. I brought this up to a few people in passing today and nobody seemed interested. I brought it up here, nobody seemed interested. I understand if you think I'm looking for a fight, but I'm not.

martin14 martin14: wildrosegirl wildrosegirl: I'm gettin' double time for it. As I damned well should if I have to miss out on the ceremony. sorry to hear that, double time aint enough. Dont forget the mandatory 'bathroom break' around 11am ! No, it certainly isn't. Regardless - all production will cease for 2 minutes of silence whether my boss/co-workers like it or not. Always have, always will. I know where my freedom came from and to whom I owe it. It'll be a cold day in hell when I don't pay tribute to the men and women who served, and the families that paid the prices along with them.

Over the past few years it has got bigger. All the parades around here are very well attended. Even in the much talked about 'cultural enclaves' of Mississauga and Brampton, the Canadians of Indian backgrounds attend local cenotaphs in large numbers.

Even in the much talked about 'cultural enclaves' of Mississauga and Brampton, the Canadians of Indian backgrounds attend local cenotaphs in large numbers. I'm not saying it isn't a big deal here. Some of the earlier comments about the way things are in Ontario (which this news article is about) make sense. Putting kids in school on Nov. 11, making it just-another-day-off etc. That doesn't happen here, schools are closed along with everything else except 7-11 and gas stations basically. People who live paycheck to paycheck are not happy about giving up 1/5 of the week's pay generally. I think there's a much better case for this in Manitoba than in Ontario by the sounds of it. Or all of Canada even. Legions call for national holiday on Nov. 11$1: "Nov. 11 should be a national holiday," said Ernie Hughes, president of the Barrhaven Legion, located in the south end of Ottawa. "That's the way most veterans here feel. Legionnaires everywhere feel the same way. Remembrance Day is growing every year. When it falls on a Saturday or Sunday we have a great turnout because the children are there."

It's a fair point. I wouldn't be too happy at losing a days pay for it.
