I think it rests with the individual to suss out the laws of Peru vs Canada. Nobody gave me anything on a plate when I emigrated to Canada.

What tripped him up is the law changed sometime between his first and second child. I imagine that would suprise most people.

Don't leave the country you weren't born in to live, work, get married to a non-Canadian and reproduce in another country and you won't have any issues at all.

Now now! Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit.

Well travelled is fine, if it comes with a bit of loyalty.

This law change impacts those who come here, get a nice blue passport and bugger off, never to be heard of again until they get in the shit in which ever third world shit-hole they go back to.

That's certainly who it was meant to impact, but I think that in certain very rare cases it'll cause a few problems for some good people.

Did he pay taxes to Canada while he worked out of country? Did he at LEAST maintain a residence or address?
If the answer is no then he is nothing more than another plastic [sarcasm] fantastic[/sarcasm] Canadian.

Unsound Unsound:
The policy is obviously aimed at so-called canadians of convienience, and as such I fully support it. While I do sympathize with this guy's situation it seems like it's likely to be a very rare sort of case.

Probably the main thing to take from it would be that people should do a better job of educating themselves. I would presume that this guy had atleast 9 months to figure out what his son's citizenship situation was likely to be. That said, I would've thought that the gov't would do a better job of informing citizens who live abroad about changes in immigration and citizenship laws.

I agree with you on that. Like I said, he probably had about 9 months to do his research.

Everyone casting aspersions on this guy, read the f*ing article:

TFA TFA:
Compton, who was brought to Canada when he was five months old, lived in the country until his early 30s. A teacher, he wanted to work in international schools. He now lives in Lima with his Peruvian wife, but plans to bring his family back to Canada in the future.

He lived in Canada for ~30 years, and plans to return. His son's slipped though a legal crack opened by spite. That's not the Canada I'm proud to be a citizen of.

I disagree Hurley. Canada is a prime immigrant destination as it’s citizenship is prized.

We have such a large population of immigrants that it’s an equitable measure to put on open immigration, that is that you actually have to live here to get all the benefits of being a Canadian citizen. It demonstrates commitment to Canada. I'm not talking about this chap, I'm talking about your so called Canadian-Lebanese or Canadian-Tamils who are more interested in Beruit and Colombo than Toronto or Vancouver.

There's a few hundred thousand 'Canadians' in Hong Kong and from Hong Kong or China that have barely been in Canada the required three years in past ten or fifteen.

I don’t think kids born to Canadians that were out of country should be classed as instant Canadian citizens, unless they are in the service of Canada as diplomats, military, aid agencies etc.

I mean, why would you want to have your kid anywhere but Canada? Trusting some third-world countries health care system, private or public seems pretty hardcore to me.

Every post you previously made in this thread except the one where you were agreeing with PA9 had some relation to this case.

Besides, as clearly evidenced by this case, you can't solve the one problem without creating the other. That's what this government fails, time and time again, to realize. Make one emotion- or ideology-driven change, and there's a lot of collateral damage. Slam the door shut on Lebanese "Canadians of convenience," create a big hassle for a guy who seems to be a dedicated Canadian who happened to be born abroad and have kids born abroad as well. He has 30 years of ties to Canada.

$1:

Then bar ALL children of Canadians born abroad from being citizens. Why the arbitrary one-generation grace? And while you're at it, strip his first son of his citizenship as he is clearly no more deserving of it than the second.

And this doesn't just affect the third world. This could happen to would-be Canadians living in the USA, England, Germany, France, Japan, Australia, etc.

If you're going to punish this guy's kid for being in the same situation as the Lebanese and Tamils, why don't you support the random breathalyzing of drivers? After all, driving is a big responsibility, a big commitment, and no more a right than citizenship.

Because it's about bigger principles than just taking the easy way out on a hot-button issue.

I'm pretty sure you need to be born in Canada; and so do your children.

And I'll agree with Hurley, people born abroad should do some time
in Canada before getting citizenship.

If for example, I wanted my Dutch citizenship or nationality back, they require
I take up Dutch residence for a minimum of 3 years before.

Not too much to ask.
