EyeBrock EyeBrock:
I disagree Hurley. Canada is a prime immigrant destination as it’s citizenship is prized.
We have such a large population of immigrants that it’s an equitable measure to put on open immigration, that is that you actually have to live here to get all the benefits of being a Canadian citizen. It demonstrates commitment to Canada. I'm not talking about this chap, I'm talking about your so called Canadian-Lebanese or Canadian-Tamils who are more interested in Beruit and Colombo than Toronto or Vancouver.
Every post you previously made in this thread except the one where you were agreeing with PA9 had some relation to this case.
Besides, as clearly evidenced by this case, you can't solve the one problem without creating the other. That's what this government fails, time and time again, to realize. Make one emotion- or ideology-driven change, and there's a lot of collateral damage. Slam the door shut on Lebanese "Canadians of convenience," create a big hassle for a guy who seems to be a dedicated Canadian who happened to be born abroad and have kids born abroad as well. He has 30 years of ties to Canada.
$1:
There's a few hundred thousand 'Canadians' in Hong Kong and from Hong Kong or China that have barely been in Canada the required three years in past ten or fifteen.
I don’t think kids born to Canadians that were out of country should be classed as instant Canadian citizens, unless they are in the service of Canada as diplomats, military, aid agencies etc.
I mean, why would you want to have your kid anywhere but Canada? Trusting some third-world countries health care system, private or public seems pretty hardcore to me.
Then bar ALL children of Canadians born abroad from being citizens. Why the arbitrary one-generation grace? And while you're at it, strip his first son of his citizenship as he is clearly no more deserving of it than the second.
And this doesn't just affect the third world. This could happen to would-be Canadians living in the USA, England, Germany, France, Japan, Australia, etc.
If you're going to punish this guy's kid for being in the same situation as the Lebanese and Tamils, why don't you support the random breathalyzing of drivers? After all, driving is a big responsibility, a big commitment, and no more a right than citizenship.
Because it's about bigger principles than just taking the easy way out on a hot-button issue.
