Nuclear subs would be great, but they would cost a fortune. Let's not forget that the infrastructure cost to operate them would be huge as well, and as Derby said, NIMBY would ensure that no existing navy base could be their home port, which means constructing another base somewhere in the middle of nowhere (which of course some environmentalists would no doubt protest).

I'd port them in Esquimalt and Halifax. Those with NIMBY problems can pack up and relocate.

What colour is the sky in your world?

Halifax might be an option, but there's no way in hell environmentalists wouldn't protest like crazy if they tried to base nuke subs in Esquimalt. And I can't imagine the BC government would be too keen either, as the image would probably harm its tourist business.

edited for spelling...

Halifax has been a naval base for over 250 years, Esquimalt over 100.

It's not like these military bases appeared overnight. It's also not as if nuclear powered/armed vessels have never visited these ports.

There's a big difference between a visit by a nuclear powered ship and basing them there 24/7/365. If you think a facility that refuels nuke powered subs wouldn't draw protests in Victoria, then you're not paying attention.

Honestly, I wish the reality was different, but based on what I've seen and heard in BC, Canadian nuke-powered subs based at Esquimalt would be a no-go for a helluva lot of people.

I would just say tough. Then again I'm not very political.

Hypothetically, if Canada had these jets plus (conventionally armed) nuclear subs we'd be a world class force to be reckoned with. We could threaten the US, that we'd stay out to sea and strike unexpectedly, if they ever took more of BC's coast. ;) But do we need this? Especially being 99.9% like-minded to our brave neighbour to south? It's not worth it, instead we'll help them stay on top and they'll help us with any ordeals, including the assertion that the North-West passage is Canadian. (against any hypothetical opponents, like the Ruskies) And we'll get high tech jobs for our kids.

These jets will help us in many ways.

Relying on someone else to defend your own sovereign territory is foolish.
