Choban Choban: andyt andyt: I don't want to sit next to somebody that's smoking. If they're far enough away that I can't smell it, let em go at it. Unfortunately people are not that considerate, hence the need for regulation. Not that it will be enforced or is all that enforceable anyway. Yah but the same can be said for people that wear too much perfume, or don't shower regularily, do we ban them as well, too much perfume can cause an allergic reaction in some people. A large open public park, someone smoking near you who won't move, simple solution would be for you to take 10 steps upwind and leave it at that (though admittedly you shouldn't have to) Personaaly my only issue with smokers in public spaces is the butts all over the ground. Exactly, I shouldn't have to move if I was there first. The law at least is an attempt to address that. Don't get me started on butts. Smokers are pigs.

We have parks where dogs are allowed to run off leash. We should reserve a few parks for smokers in the same way. The grottiest parks we've got, since they'll just mess them up anyway.

Put large ashtrays next to the benches, combined with trash bins. And fine the idiots who dump their car-ashtray contents on the damned parking lots. I have smoked for years, but I NEVER emptied my ashtray anywhere else than in a trash bin.

Plastic bags over their heads. Of course the plastic would have to be treated to be inflammable, don't want those smokers burning up and hurting themselves. Plus it's cheaper for them - they can re-inhale the smoker over and over again.

andyt andyt: CO is not the only ingredient in car exhaust, nor the most harmful unless in a confined space. If you're argument were true, you wouldn't be able to smell car exhaust at all. That is absolutely correct Andy but in an earlier post you stated that when you are sitting in a park you dont smell car or factory exhaust, and all I am pointing out is that just because you cant smell something doesnt mean that it isnt there or doing you harm. Yes the smell of cigarettes is completely disgusting and makes me want to gag but I am also aware that tobacco smoke is not the only bad thing in the air. Have you ever driven through downtown Hamilton....freaking gross

Have you ever driven through downtown Hamilton....freaking gross MY point was that I can smell somebody sitting next to me smoking, because the smoke is so concentrated, vs air pollution in general. The smoke is also air pollution, but in a more concentrated, more harmful form. We've actually done a lot to clean our air - Vancouver's is cleaner than it used to be. Pollution controls on cars are a big reason. You don't seriously think that I believe cigarette smoke is the only bad thing in the air and you have to point that out to me, do you? The thing is, Wildrose's argument is the same as saying let's not do anything about assault because murder is worse and we haven't stopped all murders. Would you smoke next to your kids in a park? If not, why are you willing to subject others to your smoke?

I am reformed smoker, swallowed my pride and quit 5 1/2 years ago. Lets be honest here smoking is becoming very socially unacceptable, which is different from illegal, so those that smoke should also be aware that 75% of the population do not share your addiction and feel they shouldnt have to smell it, look at it, or even acknowledge that it it exists especially to their kids and I am very vocal when it comes to my kids, I wont allow them to attend a daycare where any staff member smokes.

What a sterile unfun society we are becoming when people applaud ridiculous government intrusions. Smokers can't smoke inside, or outside in Vancouver. In Ontario you can't smoke in your own vehicle if the anti-smoking brigade spots a kid with you. Stupid, stupid politicians and their supporters. BTW I used to smoke as well.

Smokers cost the health care system millions of dollars each year and its a proven fact that 3rd hand smoke is more harmful than the smoke from cigarettes. It is a drug habit just like the other unacceptable drugs. Should be banned totally!

$1: MY point was that I can smell somebody sitting next to me smoking, You can smell a smoker even if they are not smoking at that time. Being a recovered smoker, I think it's disgusting, and I do not want to be reminded that I used to smell like that and was inconsiderate to other peoples feelings, thinking I "had a right to smoke everywhere".

What exactly is third hand smoke? $1: Smokers cost the health care system millions of dollars each year So do obese people. So do those who suffer from hereditary diseases. Do you propose denying them treatment? Also, smokers pay millions in taxes for cigarettes, maybe we should start a sin tax on junk food!
