EyeBrock EyeBrock:
I'm sorry boots, Garneau is wrong. I think there is great public support for a hardline with these queue-jumpers. Harper has a gift here and the Liberals will lose support over this.

It's similar to the tone Obama took with the 911 mosque. Obama misjudged the public mood on this to the Republicans advantage.

Both these were no-brainer issues.

I'm sure there are lots of people who do support a hard line approach with these refugees. My point was that dealing with them on a case-by-case basis is a good approach, because even the government isn't saying all 490 are terrorists.

And given that Harper didn't take a hard line with them before dropping them in Victoria, I don't see how he can possibly spin it to look like he is actually doing that. A hard line approach would have been to make them drop anchor in the harbour for a day or two while health and security officials 'inspected' the vessel and its occupants. Instead, he set up picnic tables and tents and invited them ashore.

I don't see any party gaining much traction from this.

I don't think they are all terrorists Boots. I'm sure there are a few on there that were bravely hiding behind women and kids, it is the Tamil Tiger way.

But they are all cheats and they all bought their way into Canada and flouted our laws to do so.

The gain will be that Harper will now have the public support needed to ram real changes to immigration through a minority parliament.

The Liberals have played into his hands by opposing tougher treatment despite a large majority of Canadians wanting stern action.

It will be tough for the Libs on this if they don't use a bit of common sense and see that the public are getting pissed off with special treatment for particular ethnic groups.

Agreed, The Liberals have fucked themselves with this one. No doubt they will try to reverse it later on with some bs excuse to save there ass's. However I am glad atleast somebody is looking to take a change to this broken immigration system.

Uh no, they are not "Cheats" at all. In fact, these Boat People are likely less "Cheats" than the average Refuge Claimant. 30,000 People come to Canada each Year and claim Refuge Status. The vast majority do so by Flying into the Country, often with Fake ID.

That's how the Refuge system works, you show up and Apply. You don't go to a Foreign Embassy and start the Paper Work in your Home Country, because it's too dangerous for you and your Family.

They paid $50,000 to get a seat on this tub and circumvent Canada's immigration system.

Boat people my ass.

What do you call a person from a Third World country that can afford to pay $50K to get to Canada?

I had an overdraft to pay back in LimeyLand when I got here. I couldn't afford $50,000 so I did it the legal way, three years later and numerous hoops jumped through, I got in.

They are cheats and I would be so bold to say, there will be liars amongst them.

You have special knowledge of the immigration system sand? Or is it another subject you 'fail' on?

One of the first questions that came to my mind when all this bs started was exactly that... How in hell did these people "fleeing" their country come up with that amount of money to pay their way out? It just doesn't make any sense.

I've known a few people now that, like you, had to go through alot in order to move here. Seems stupid that those who do it the legal way have to go through more than those who just show up and get in seemingly so easily.

And as far as changes coming to the laws... yea, heard this story before. Blah blah blah. Stop talking about it and DO something about it.

I dunno where they got the $$, but suspect they didn't really Pay as much as Promise. Some of them may very well have been Well Off in their Home Nation.

Sorry, they are not "Cheats", they are Refugees. Like I said, this arrival by Boat was filled with much Fanfare and all, but it was merely a drop in the bucket compared to the 30,000 who arrive by Air every single Year also seeking Refuge.

If we ban all law abiding immigrants, then only criminals will get to immigrate!

I'm well aware of the the tens of thousands of other cheats and liars who abuse our overly lax and generous refugee system Sand.

These 500 cheats are just in the media glare but YYZ gets more than that in a week. People who lie their way on to aircraft then destroy their fake passports on landing because they know we will take them anyway.

I'm all for real refugees getting here.

We should stop accepting these well-off 'refugees' at our ports and go to the UN camps for 30,000 real refugees a year.

I would be much happier with that.

Taking more liars isn't something I'd advocate. We have enough in Canada already.

Again, they are not "Cheats". That's the way the system works. Refugees are not simply Immigrants, they are people at risk. Certainly not all who claim Refugee Status are in fact Refugees, which is why there's a system in place to verify their Claims.

We don't "have enough". We need to double or triple our Population, even more than that in time.

Need?

Why do we 'need' more people? Where I live in Ontario, we are well the fuck-full.

Houses are being built everywhere. The roads are clogged with traffic. The hospitals are full. Unemployment ranges fom 10-20%. This is not a boom time. Bringing people into the country isn't helping the situation, it just adds to the strain on the infrastructure.

Immigration into Canada should benefit Canada, and unfettered immigration is not the way to go quite yet.

Harper plan will be to cut the civil service so that claims will take 10 years to process. Thus creating even more que jumpers.

The thing is wiki-sand, new immigrants don't go to the empty bits.

Nunavut? Labrador? Whitehorse? Nah, Mississauga or Scarborough, or Vancouver.

The empty bits? Well once it got tough for the Hudson's Bay boys to get in, you lot just let the urbanites in. Immigrants from crappy cities overseas looking for the Wall Street dream.

They won't go to those cold, barren bits. They like Starbucks and No-Frills.

The Charter says we can't tell new immigrants where to go, so they will just all end up in the big cities.

So, full, 'lol' (do people really think that's a good expression?), yep.

The bits of Canada that immigrants want to cram into, they are well-the-fuck full.

Where do you live sand? Just for shits, giggles and interest.
