Canada is a better place for having abolished it.
I don't think we are any better off, on the other hand I don't think we are any worse off either, there will always be proponents and opponents to the death penalty.
I do however believe we need our justice system fixed before we are even remotely prepared to even think about opening death sentences for discussion.
I think we are, morally, and so we are better off. Killing someone who killed your loved one doesn't magically bring back your loved one.
I simply think that revenge killings (which is essentially what capital punishment is) is morally wrong. If you do it in self-defence or the defence of your nation (a form of self-defence), then I'm okay with it, but what happens if you execute the wrong guy?
The only problem I have is that a caveat of abolishing the death penalty should have been mandatory life sentences (life - not 25 years) for anyone convicted of murder or rape.
