Those that prey on children or are repeat offenders(any crime) should be put to death, they are a waste and a drain on society. Why pay to keep them alive in jail, just get rid of them all.

Canada is a better place for having abolished it.

So a habitual shoplifter (or a clinical cleptomaniac), what about someone who smokes pot everyday, or bootlegs for a 17 year old more than once?

I don't really have an issue with frying the likes of Bernardo or Olson. Is the killing of those that turn out to be not guilty that's an issue. If they guy turns out to be not guilty, the judge hangs--that would be fair.

I don't think we are any better off, on the other hand I don't think we are any worse off either, there will always be proponents and opponents to the death penalty.

I do however believe we need our justice system fixed before we are even remotely prepared to even think about opening death sentences for discussion.

My biggest problem with the death penalty, and one which should be shared by left and right alike, is that it's administered by the gov't. You know, the same people we can't really trust to get anything right.

I think we are, morally, and so we are better off. Killing someone who killed your loved one doesn't magically bring back your loved one.

I simply think that revenge killings (which is essentially what capital punishment is) is morally wrong. If you do it in self-defence or the defence of your nation (a form of self-defence), then I'm okay with it, but what happens if you execute the wrong guy?

The only problem I have is that a caveat of abolishing the death penalty should have been mandatory life sentences (life - not 25 years) for anyone convicted of murder or rape.

Morally better off when the majority of the population would welcome the death penalty, or we have a moral govenment that doesn't listen to it's citizens?

Anyway, it's a fine line and lots to fix before any change in this regard should be brought up.

Since some of people keep harping on how the death penalty won't bring back the victim, here's a solution. How about we ask the families of the deceased if they want the murderer given the death penalty or life in prison?

That way they get to choose their own personalized form of closure.

But with that being said, I'm guessing that the numbers in favor of the death penalty would drop dramatically if the Government changed life sentence to actually mean "Life" with limited or no opportunity for parole.

I think it would be interesting to compare the number of people wrongly executed for murder to the number of people who were the second murder victim of a convicted murderer that was released on bail or when his sentence was up.
