Zipperfish Zipperfish:
People are probably more outraged because the birds are cute than endagered.

More likely people are outraged because eagle nearly went extinct because of humans with less than 1000 bald eagles at one point. The idea that we should let someone start killing them again for no propose other than for their tradition is idiotic. Just because my ancestors killed bald eagles doesn't give me the rights to go out and kill them.

No I don't agree that the bald eagle "nearly went extinct." There are plenty of eagles in BC. Sometimes I see hundreds of them roosting on river rocks during the salmon runs. They have never been considered endangered here, and I don't believe that bald eagles were ever down to 1000.

I agree that it's idiotic to kill a bird for its feather, but then I think it's idiotic to kill a seal so buddy can buy his wife a fur coat. And I think it's idiotiuc to kill a bear so you can mount its head over your fireplace.

I agree 100% with this statement. Hunting for food is okay, hunting for trophys is complete bullshit.

Hunting is only a true sport when what you are hunting, has the capability to hunt you in return.

Anything else is just harvesting, farming. :D

In the 1950s there were less than 500 nesting pairs in the USA. DDT did lots of damage to them as well and luckily there was some areas in BC and Alaska where the populations held out long enough for conservation efforts start taking affect. So I would say they nearly went extinct.

I think the key word there is "in the USA." There have always been probably tens of thousands of bald eagles in BC.

Yes, watch them hunt the Eagle using traditional native weapons, high power rifles with telescopic sights.

I can't find the numbers in Canada but we did sign international treaties with the USA to protect the bald eagles so they couldn't have been doing to well here.

So long as they catch the birds bare-handed while the birds are in flight I'm okay with this.

Wada Wada:
You in the United States would not have the eagles you have if it was not for Canada and those who care and it was not the Indians who killed off your eagle population but the white man and his use of chemicals like DDT.

Yet you conveniently...or is it intentionally, ignore the fact that the evil white man is trying to do something to correct this past wrong.

Demand that they be allowed to hunt them or poach them like they have been, what's the fucking difference.

Either way the Governments will cave and we'll see every indian in downtown Vancouver wearing eagle feathers on their Native Pride hats.

I am personally sick and tired of seeing 4.01% of the population continually demanding rights and priviledges that the other 95.9% would never dream of being entitled to, and then having our governments give into their tantrums.

We have the same problem in The States. We have to change a number of things in our culture to make them happy.

Yep....that does kinda say it all. This is no different then the "aboriginal food fishery" that they claim is their heritage also. I didn't know their ancestors a few hundred years ago had 18 foot aluminum boats, 60 hp Mercury engine powering them, nylon nets and "secret" processing plants to sell them for cash. Doesn't look like a subsistence fishery to me? Sounds like modern free enterprise, oh wait, it would be if they paid taxes like the rest of us 95.9% of Canadians.

Yup. Just like Clayoquot sound, where the Indians along with every tree hugging twit from downtown TO protested the rape of this supposed last wilderness old growth forest by the white man.

As soon as it was turned over the the indians stewartship they started logging it, which says alot for their concern about the environment doesn't it? All they protested for was to make sure that nobody else cut into their profit margin.

But on the plus side they plan to only log scientifically, which, given native speak likely means much the same as for ceremonial purposes only.
