Sez me, who does have kids. Either my wife or myself have our youngest, who is 6, firmly in hand when boarding or leaving any mass transit because we know children aren't careful and need adults to watch out for them. A moment of indiscretion can lead to a life time of reflection.
So just to get this straight then--you've never lost sight of your kids, even for a moment?
Well, I stand corrected. I met the perfect parent.
Not around trains or automobiles, or anywhere there is an obvious danger. Not perfect just responsible...it's part of being a parent, being proactive.

I try to be careful too. But lost my son for about five minutes at a zoo one time. And inadvertently hiked into a rattlesnake den with him another. All-in-all, I consider myself pretty careful, but it's impossible to be perfect.

Truly sad.
Sometimes I wonder why there so many injuries/deaths involved in with the C-Train. Edmonton has essentially the same system (albeit with fewer stations), but it seems like every year I see an article about a Calgarian who dies accidently at a C-Train station.
And no, I'm not saying Edmontonians are smarter or better than Calgarians, just wondering why two very similar cities with very similar LRT systems have such a different level of injuries/deaths related to its use.

I'll back Zipper on this a bit. One can't keep their kids safe 100% of the time all the time. Who knows, this may have been the 1% of the times the kid pulled away from the parent, or maybe if it had a sibling who caused a distraction for a moment that caused it to because the parents grip was not tight due to being distracted by dealing with the other child.
There is also the parenting difference possibility. How do you force yoru spouse to be more protective and smart? Serious question, I have this issue with my wife. I cringe to watch what she lets the kids do, like run way ahead down the street past blind driveways etc. Yelling and bitching didn't change how she does it so I gave up ab out a year ago.

A rattlesnake den is a danger you really can't anticipate. Dangers on a train platform are already known. Maybe I'm paranoid, because we live in a culture that is so unthinking, when it comes to others I think ahead about possible dangers. Maybe this sort of 'thinking' develops when you have worked in warzones, with UXO and have had co workers die due to poor safety observations....also part of the same reactive society.

I imagine if you walk over a mine it won't matter whose hand your holding at the time

Most parents tend to avoid areas where there is a known danger......it's all that stuff out there that we have no control over.

That's just horrible...
I can't imagine how the parents must feel. Regardless of what happened, they will feel guilty forever, apart from the loss

And if you take them into those areas of Winnipeg that make it on the news, you're intentionally putting them in harms way. Enjoy the other 90% of the city instead.

Regardless (and I have kids), most tragic deaths can be avoided with a good ammount of common sence, Fact is we weren't there and don't really have the whole picture, I gather from news reports they were running to catch the train and this is just an accident.
In response to Bootlegga, I don't know, your right they are pretty much the same system here and in Edmonton and I hardly ever hear about accidents with the trains in Edmonton, seems that every year there a few here though.
Sad to say a moments innattention can have drastic consequences, especially with kids. Remember this
