I don't think it's even worth examining this issue with you. Look, behind you! A Jew.

First you open the topic, then you back off.

Maybe the Aspers buying CanWest didn't make much news in Toronto, where you have other local papers, but in Vancouver, where both locals are owned by CanWest, as well as one of 2 nationals, this was widely discussed. People quit and were fired over the policy. I guess if you're way over on the support Israel at all costs side, this seems OK to you, but you know, for people who want a bit of balance in their news, not so much.

Not that the shift was all that huge - Conrad Black wasn't exactly a Palestinian supporter either - but under his rule the coverage was more balanced.

I'm not support Israel at all costs but the Aspers didn't alter the National Post much from Conrad's stewardship. if anything they started to lean more towards the centre. Don Martin came on board with Izzy and the rest and he's a big Liberal.

No, I just see you referring to the 'Jews' running our media. I dunno but your words make me feel a little uncomfortable. Why do so many people hate the Jews?

If a prominent Jewish family owns the largest newspaper chain in Canada, one that essentially owns markets like Vancouver, and they also own one of the two TV networks, then people who happen to be Jewish certainly have a big influence in our media. If you're only looking at the NP, that's not much of an issue, nobody reads that rag anyway - but the local papers people sure do.

I don't know why right away you want to smear me with the antisemitism label. I'm critical of CanWest's stated policy of being pro Israel. It's the owner's right to do so, but when they dominate the market to the extent they do, I think it's a problem. If we had more diversity in media ownership in Canada, it wouldn't bother me nearly as much.

I don't hate Jews, I don't hate Israel, and the two are not the same. I'll be critical of an individual Jew if he does something I disagree with, same as I would of any other ethnicity. And I'll be critical of Israel when they act in ways I don't agree with - the settlements would be the big thing for me. None of that makes me a Jew hater.

Why does the owners religion cause such consternation?

The Toronto Star has the biggest circulation/readership in Canada (so they say). They are less than pro-Israel, bordering on anti-Israel. Do we know what religion the owners of that paper are?

I'm not smearing anybody. I'm just uncomfortable with the language you use.

A simple test for those who are denying their discrimination against Jews, try substituting the word Jews with blacks, gays etc.. Discrimination and bigotry seems to be okay if directed at Jewish people.

The consternation is about their policy toward Israel. That policy certainly makes sense in light of their ethnicity. But Harper has the same policy and is not a member of that tribe.

The Star might have the largest individual circulation, but it doesn't reach outside of TO as far as I'm aware. And I believe you have other local papers in TO - surely CanWest has one there? So you have some balance in the market - we don't in Vancouver.

Not speaking for others but I do acknowledge that I am prejudiced towards militant Islam and would gladly help them to martyrdom! PDT_Armataz_01_36

Forgot to add that some of the posters here who openly condemn Israel and the Jews for anything they do to protect themselves consider themselves good, compassionate, tolerant people. I'm merely pointing out theri hypocrosy. 8)
