I have never had a downright rude CBSA agent. However, with only one exception, everytime I go to the States I get a surly border guard, and that includes the ones at airport pre-clearance sectors in CANADIAN airports. Sometimes I have wanted to say "You're a guest in this country. Act like it. I know you have to do your job, but at least you're not slinging hash in some Detroit shit-house."
I've even experimented to see if I get better treatment when presenting a U.S. Passport. Nope. It's even worse. They grill you twice as hard. A US guard in Buffalo straight up asked me if I had any narcotics as he put on the blue latex gloves. It was literally the second thing he asked me after 'where were you born'?
Only made that mistake once. And as far as my U.S. passport goes, I don't plan on ever renewing it.
On the other hand, when coming back to Canada, I'm more often than not greeted with a 'welcome home', after which I just feel like kissing the ground and saying 'THANK GOD I'M CANADIAN!'
Seriously, if it weren't for the fact that I have family in the States, I probably would never go there again.
