I agree that $172 dollars isn't enough, but I'm pissed at how many fines are in the $500 or higher range. when a person is taking home less than 40k after taxes, someone ought to have his balls cut off to suggest that a $1200 speeding ticket - where no harm was done - is reasonable.

Are we speaking of personal experience perhaps? That must have been quite some speeding to get a fine like that. Lucky the person didn't lose their license.

drive past a parked police office on the transcanada in Alberta at the posted speed limit of 110km/h.

the law states that yuo are supposed to slow down to 60km, so you are exceeding the speed by 50km/h...a $600 fine.....but because its a safety related fine, much like speeding in a construction zone, the fine doubles...

hence doing the speed limit on the transcanada between calgary and banff can cost you $1200

Harsh. Maybe they do that to make up for no sales tax?

But, aren't you kind of a rightwingy guy? Aren't you guy big on law and order, want stiffer penalties for crimes? Speeding kills - if you've seen those videos on TV where a cop gets nailed by somebody on the freeway, so there's a good reason for the law.

unfortunately, its got little to do with safety because we have to slow down to 60kmh for a trained professional, yet, if your grade 1 teacher gets a flat tire and puts on her 4 way flashers....the law does not apply to her.

its a money grab

Just a law outlawing driving while distracted should do, otherwise you run the risk of some cop fining someone for running their fingers through their hair. If a cop can show that someone is driving while distracted (hair, reading a book, cell phone, having sex with Ralph Kline's wife, whatever) than a fine is due.

you sir should stick to topics that you know of. You do not know what it is like to have sex with King Ralphy's wife, therefore you should not be passing judgement on it.

Really unlikely the police will be enforcing this beyond bureaucratically imposed blitzs and to use as a reason to pull someone over for another reason, or add a charge to them if there is an accident. They just don't have the time.

also, when you think of $500 jay walking tickets given to a walmart employee...thats crippling.....thats insane.....why no save the guy some money and send him to jail for 30 days?

I agree with taking income into account. In Finland they do. I believe one guy got a $250,000 fine because of his wealth.

Switzerland has the same laws in effect in regards to fines based on annual income. Some dude earlier this year got nailed with a $290,000 fine for doing 85mph in a 35mph zone.
And the citizens of BOTH countries scream about the egalitarianism in these fines. Heck, if you don't like the fines, then don't do stupid shit that'll earn them.

What stupid shit? Being forced to actually PAY ATTENTION to the road yer driving on? Actually driving the speed limit instead of 30-40 over? Having at least ONE hand on the wheel?
The ONLY people that complain about this "stupid shit" are the ones being fined for being stupid behind the wheel. Smarten the hell up people, yer not the only one on the road.

bootlegga bootlegga:
Strathcona County (the suburbs east of Edmonton) already have a similar bylaw.

Frankly, I'm all for it. I'm tired of bozos swerving all over the road because they're eating, shaving, putting on make-up, talking on their cellphones, etc.

IMHO, $172 isn't stiff enough, it should be the same as running a red or failing to stop for peds - $500.

as with any ban however, just because it become illegal doesn't mean it is going to stop.
