Choban Choban: I cannot understand peoples insitance on going to Mexico (or any other under developed tourist trap), I know that for every horror story there at 100's of good vacations but the risk outweighs the possable gain to me, I for one have nor will ever go to mexico, same for cuba, the dominican ect.. Mexico or Cuba I can understand avoiding but everywhere else in the Caribbean I've been has been a fantastic time.

From what I've heard crime is low, things are pretty safe. Jamaica was certainly in the news a lot at one time because of crime on tourists. Remember that 10cc song? The Caribbean has the second highest ratio of gun deaths after South America, because of the macho culture of the inhabitants. As we continually see played out in Toronto. But maybe they don't shoot tourists anymore.

andyt andyt: What's the problem with Cuba? Just a personal issue where I don't like contributing a single penny to communist dictatorships. When they decide to become a democratic nation I will consider visiting if every other island in the Carib is full!

Cuba is actually one of the safest countries to visit..I have been there more than a dozen times and never felt unsafe.. Mexico, even in Puerto Vallarta there were times when we were uncomfortable. Jamaica was another place I kept my guard up. Cuba depends on tourism and Canadians make up the majority of tourists. There is corruption by the police and authorities, but it is directed at the locals. Tourists are not bothered much.

I don't care how safe Cuba might be and I will not give one nickel to them until the denounce communism. There are far better places to go in the Caribbean that are democracies with better beaches, amenities and nightlife!

The cold war ended you know...time to ditch the mindset from 50 years ago Last I checked, Cuba was still communist. I don't care to visit any communist country, no matter what they promise. kenmore kenmore: booo hoooo.. guess when the world dances to your conservative drum the universe will unfold as you think it should The world is starting to march to a more conservative drum, and people like yourself will have to just accept it! The beauty is, you can keep visiting your Cuban communist paradise and I won't run into you at the better, cleaner, nicer Caribbean resorts.

I agree with 2Cdo on Cuba. I went there once and it just wasn't a comfortable vacation. I'm not one that 'switches off' easily and the things going on around me with minders, police, army, political officers etc made me feel ill at ease. It reminded me of my time in Ethiopia when Mengistu and his Communists ruled that country.
Even though Mexico is corrupt and violent I never felt threatened or unsafe on any of my recent trips to the Mayan Riviera.
You have to use common sense anywhere you go and most Canadians/Yanks who get in the shit in Mexico have been engaging in behaviour that makes them a target. They need to remember that Cancun isn't Mississauga. Act accordingly or stay home.

QBall QBall: They went driving through Mexico? Are they nucking futs? Guess some people have to learn the hard way. Exactly. Mexico is NOT a safe place to visit even when things are good. When my wife and I took a cruise to Mexico in 2007 we saw military in combat dress at every port and then as the ship (the Dawn Princess) left Acapulco we were serenaded by the sounds of a firefight between the drug lords and the police. I will not be going back to Mexico. Period.

If the vote whoreing politicians in the southern states want the southern States them Make them part of Mexico and they can deal with civil minded individuals like El Chappo and Pablo Escobar. Sorry to get off the thread, but I couldn't resist.
