Actually, yes they were.
Typewriters were registered and a sample of type had to be submitted to the police for forensic purposes. Possession of an unregistered typewriter was a crime.
In contrast, while firearms were restricted, ballistics were not registered with the police so, therefore, typewriters were subject to stricter controls than were firearms.
