It's a cyclic phenomenon where the tropical up-layer water of the pacific ocean is higuer than normal. It changes the normal temperature of all America.
The last big one was around winter of 1997-1998. We had a québécois singer (Plume Latraverse) who wrote a song about it because everything seemed to be the fault of "El Nino". And the song title was "C't'encore la faute à El Nino" (It is AGAIN El Nino's fault). In the song, everything from the Africans lacking food or the economic problems in Asia was El Nino's fault
