There is nothing wrong with national pride but patriotism, to me anyway, is a disease of the middle mind. It smacks of jingoism.
THis is oversimplified but to me national pride is a case of personal opinion, as in "I think Canada is the greatest country on the Earth".
Patriotism is a bold statement of fact, as in "Canada is the best damn country on the planet".
You can't argue with the first statement as it is opinion, and opinions are neither right nor wrong.
The second statement however is highly subjective based on where you live and how you perceive life in your own country.
Should we be pround of our Olympic athletes? Yer damn skippy we should be. They did a damn fine job and put on a good show. But to tie our identities in with these events that the vast majority of us had dick all to do with, is kinda lame, just like when any other country does it. My Canadianism isn't based on whether we win hockey, or how many golds we won.
That being said, I certainly don't agree with the slant of the original article.
If you wanna talk rabid patriotism during the Olympics, one need look no further than Salt Lake City. Fuck, we STILL hear about the "miracle on ice" there
