The Islanders celebrate their liberation from Argentine invaders every single year since the war ended. It's a public holiday.
The inhabitants are English-speaking, shepherding Brits; there's no justification for their being forced to become Hispanic Argentinians.
Those islands are British, plain and simple.
I'm not defending the Argentinians, but compared to other Latin American states it's quite multi cultural, rather than hispanic. 40% of the population claim Italian ancestry and there are very sizeable German and British ethnic minorities in the nation. Once upon a time, it had more in common with Canada, Australia and the United States, than it did with its neighbours
To be sure, Argentina is probably the only country I ever considered visiting in South America. I'm not one of these guilt-ridden white westerners that thinks it's cool to travel in politically unstable countries to compensate for the fact that I was born a citizen of a rich, stable G8 nation. I have a lot of friends that brag about going to South America or to south-east Asia to take vacations in other people's misery... Not my cup of tea. Maybe it's me, but when I spend a few thousand dollars on a vacation, I like to relax and not have to worry about having my liver harvested for the black market.
I looked into travelling to Argentina because it seemed, as you said, almost like a proper New World country like Canada or Australia. Unfortunately, as close as they have come, they still have seen coups d'état, military juntas, mass corruption and astronomical crime rates (especially against vulnerable tourists).
I'm sorry, but any country where I have to leave my passport at the hotel safe, where I have to know how to call not just a taxi, but the right taxi that won't hold me for ransom... count me out.
At the end of the day, it's not hard to understand why the Islanders want to stay British.
