The Islanders celebrate their liberation from Argentine invaders every single year since the war ended. It's a public holiday.

The inhabitants are English-speaking, shepherding Brits; there's no justification for their being forced to become Hispanic Argentinians.

Those islands are British, plain and simple.

I'm not defending the Argentinians, but compared to other Latin American states it's quite multi cultural, rather than hispanic. 40% of the population claim Italian ancestry and there are very sizeable German and British ethnic minorities in the nation. Once upon a time, it had more in common with Canada, Australia and the United States, than it did with its neighbours

Let me see if I have this straight.President Fernandez de Kirchner wants to take a page out of General Leopold Galtieri's playbook.Nothing like mentioning the Falklands to make Argentina forget all about the dismal performance of thier President for a while.Didn't work for General Galtieri. Its not going to work for President Fernandez de Kirchner.Secretary of state Hillary Clinton makes a side trip on her tour to kiss some Latin American ass.She is going to need the Hispanic vote for her next run for President in 2012.In the process we stab one of our greatest allies in the back.Britain has always been there for the U.S. As an American I have to call bullshit! The question of the Falklands was settled in 1982. 255 British soldiers gave thier lives in that conflict. Two self serving politicians are trampling on the graves of those soldiers to further thier own political carrers.I think its disgusting.Great Britain tell Clinton to piss off.And tell Argentina that if the Royal Navy has to make a second trip to the Falklands, the British empire will expand its territory to include some of Argentina this time. The people of the United States stand with the United Kingdom.

The people might,
The US military might,

but having Obama toss the bust of Winston Churchill out
certainly sent the wrong message.

You are so right.I am surprised he hasn't changed the name of the USS Winston S Churcill to the USS Hugo Chavez yet.

I agree Shep. There is a good size Welsh community there (of all things and places!).

The Argies though have a very tenuous claim to these islands. They seem to think that they are the rightful heirs to the old Spanish Empire.

The Brits are going nowhere and the Falkland Islanders are there for good.

I'm sure there is already a Royal Navy hunter-killer sub bobbing in the waters close to Argentina and a couple of more frigates will be en route as is an RAF squadron on re-force. The whole military complex on FI has been built with a 24 hour re-force in mind.

The Brit's would be happy to have a distraction away from Afghanistan, crap economy, wanker as a PM etc.

They can still easily beat the Argies in a conventional war and I would think they would be more than willing to oblige any gung-ho Argie generals.

If the Argentines have any sense they'll remember that while they said only the FI were a war zone in 1982 the RAF had other ideas and so did the Royal Navy.

I don't think they can have forgotten so soon Bart. It's politics but it's politics that could end badly again for the Argies.

The Argentines stopped a supply ship enroute to the FI. And they say that the Brits should not worry about military action...seems that line has already been crossed.

And the Argentines sudden interest in the FI is merely coincidental with the beginning of drilling for the estimated 60 billion barrels of oil in the Falklands' territorial waters.

Yes its funny how that works, They smell of oil and money in the air and
Argentina wants it.

POTUS and Hillary Clinton are tripping overthemselves to be PC and
pander to Latin America liking us, which will never happen anyway.

To be sure, Argentina is probably the only country I ever considered visiting in South America. I'm not one of these guilt-ridden white westerners that thinks it's cool to travel in politically unstable countries to compensate for the fact that I was born a citizen of a rich, stable G8 nation. I have a lot of friends that brag about going to South America or to south-east Asia to take vacations in other people's misery... Not my cup of tea. Maybe it's me, but when I spend a few thousand dollars on a vacation, I like to relax and not have to worry about having my liver harvested for the black market.

I looked into travelling to Argentina because it seemed, as you said, almost like a proper New World country like Canada or Australia. Unfortunately, as close as they have come, they still have seen coups d'état, military juntas, mass corruption and astronomical crime rates (especially against vulnerable tourists).

I'm sorry, but any country where I have to leave my passport at the hotel safe, where I have to know how to call not just a taxi, but the right taxi that won't hold me for ransom... count me out.

At the end of the day, it's not hard to understand why the Islanders want to stay British.

You better not go to any major city then...
Always take ID with you, but not your passport ;-)
