So GM is no longer offering hummers? Thats OK. Apparently Hillary Duff is! Lucky Mike Comrie from the Oilers. So many jokes ..... The Oilers suck and apparently so do their girlfriends. Oiler fans are hoping they don't blow the big one. Mike Comrie is thinking the opposite. Fans are worried about the Oilers choking. I'd be more worried about Lizzie McGuire

Glad to see it go. Not only was it ugly(at least the pussied out models were, the original is BAD-ASS) but a HUGE pig to boot.

I remember seeing Duff at a Sens game when Comrie used to play for us. And damn, he looks like he's enjoying it too. I wish I was him right now.

Te only folk that are really going to miss the Hummer are the drug gangs out here that turn them into pimped out bullet proof transport tanks. They could afford the fuel costs......

Personally, I think all SUV's should be banned in cities. They're huge, you can't see over or around them, so driving awareness gets cut down if you're behind them. They are gas guzzlers, huge polluters( as far as street vehicles go) and quite frankly, serve no useful purpose in city driving. And what REALLY pisses me off is seeing these on city roads with only ONE person in it. The only manufacturer that even pretends that ppl will take their SUV's off -road is Jeep, which can be seen by them making skid plates standard equipment on all Jeep models. Most other SUV manufacturers offer skid plates as an option only.

I like the jeeps, but I'd rather run a 4runner through the woods. Don't get me wrong I'd take a jeep up the rocks, but I like the 4runner for the woods. offtopic -- can anyone tell me what the deal is with the lack of Standard transmissions these days?

Most SUV's these days can't do much offroading. They don't have a low range, their tires would get carved up on the rocks, and they're just not built strong enough. Even the Hummers you see with the huge chrome wheels - good luck with that thing off road. For most people, a station wagon would serve the same purpose, but that's not cool, so they get an SUV
As for Jeep vs Toyota - I had a Cherokee that I lowered the gearing on. The thing was great on washed out logging roads, trails. But, it was a piece of crap as far as reliability went. A 4x4 is only useful if it also gets you home, not just stuck in some remote place. I traded that for a 4runner, which was solid as an anchor, but didn't have the suspension to crawl over rocks - it would lose traction. The best vehicle for my needs, out of the box, was a Pathfinder with the trailboss package. The soft suspension and big tires hooked up in difficult conditions (tho not as well as the Cherokee), and the thing rode like a sedan on the highway - smooth and quiet.
I think Jeep quality is still below par - the best bet these days might be a Toyota FJ - it comes pretty capable right from the factory. The new 4Runner looks pretty good too, but it's just too big for tight situations or getting highcentered.

Every vehicle comes with a transmission as standard equipment - some also offer optional ones. You mean a manual? Most people don't want them. They don't drive in a way that makes a manual a better choice. And with the new manumatics, I think manuals are on the way out. Why have a manual, when you can have a transmission that shifts much more quickly, is just as efficient, and in fact seems to return better fuel economy.

I know they manumatics are efficient and effective, but I love the connection to the car you get with a manual. I was looking at the new 4runners and it's not even an option and it made me sad. Plus, it's all I really know how to drive.

Can anyone tell me what the deal is with the lack of engines that start with a hand cranck? I can start an engine with a hand crank much more efficiently than an electric starter motor.....besides, it is more fun, too.

When I was into 4 wheeling, I much preferred an automatic. It's a lot easier for slow crawling. I know a really skilled driver can make a manual work better in slow crawling, but for me the auto did just as well. You just can't pull yourself forward wit the starter motor the way you can with a manual, but that's getting pretty extreme anyway. The FJ still offers a manual, and with it's smaller size is going to do better in the rough anyway. Tho I don't think it offers that swaybar disconnect the 4Runner does.
For me sticks were important when I was being boy racer - but that was a long time ago. I guess another reason manuals are losing their popularity - Canada is aging and prefers comfort over speed.
