Well, the initial punching was somewhat deserved. You don't go to someone's home and start insulting them in it. On the other hand, the assailiant is the one that GAVE power to the N-word by his reaction and going back to stomp the guy's head AFTER already giving him a shit kicking was WAY over the top.
As I said, it is us that gives power to words. Words alone have no power.
For eg, Taffy is a racial slur towards Welsh people. If I got uptight everytime some limey called me a Taffy, I'd have a record for assault as long as your arm.
The said part is, the assailant acted just like the name he was called.
Precisely. If blacks didn't give care if others call them "niggers" the word will simply lose its sting.
Getting uptight about it empowers racists.
