It's an assault.

At a stretch it could be 'assault with a weapon' as the pie was being used as a weapon of opportunity and not for it's intended purpose.

It's a pretty reasonable 'cause disturbance'.

There could also be a mischief (property damage to her clothes. There's a few charges worth a go there.

What ever side of the political spectrum you are on, these kind of assaults shouldn't be brushed off lightly.

This is a very different case.

From the article it appears that the police acted on the orders of Chretien. Political interference on operational policing was something that the PMO under Chretien was notorious for (APEC summit anyone?). The police according to the judge, acted in ‘good faith’ on the information they were given. This case has taken a long time to get the SCC because of other, very political factors on top of the possible interference of Chretien and his staff.

The similarity between the two cases is the political overreaction:
