So what happens to the carbon tax when global warming fails to occur?

What happens to the temperature of the earth is unimportant, from an economic perspective. What should be more of a concern is that the more effective the tax is in reducing emissions, the more government revenues are reduced. Any environmental tax is supposed to result in declining tax revenues over time. That means, unless there is an offsetting number of new polluters, you need to find new revenue sources as the program matures.

Same thing that happened to the McGuinty 'health-care premuim' that takes $400 extra a month from my family. No new hospitals in my city since 2004 when it was brought in but I'm still paying it. Same shit service for $400 more a month. Bargain.

I'm sure the carbon tax can line the pockets of a few dozen or so 'consultants' aka E-Health without helping the planet one bit.

On a relative note...

Last Tuesday I managed to slice the end off a finger, went to the hospital and was told there would be a 5 hour wait (just one doctor on emergency). After waiting 6 hours I was then told the wait was approx' another 3 hours or come back in the morning.

I informed the clerk there is a max 12 hour time period to apply stitches and was seen immediately by a doctor who magically appeared.

By this time the end of my finger had carbonised and is eligible for taxation.

So much for emergency "Fast Track".

Oh it's a terrible idea, but knowing who's the President currently, there's an issue.

Some people, when advocating for a carbon tax system, state that they should put tariffs on countries who do NOT implement the system, thus keeping local manufacturing competitive. If the Americans implement the carbon system, and put into place a tariff system, our trade with the US will probably decrease.

Of course, I'm sure a few people will cheer with glee when they happens, and say we should trade more with China or India or whoever, but honestly, trade doesn't exactly work that way. Thus the wonders of corporations.

Odds are our trade with the US would increase, and trade with Asia would fall actually. If we levy tariffs on heavy carbon users, it'll be countries like China and India with their old, obsolete factories that will suffer, not the US, as their factories are far more energy efficient than ones in Asia.

Lemmy Lemmy:
It's funny why people are so against a Carbon tax, but willingly hand over 50% of their income to the government as Income tax. At least an environmental tax has a purpose and a reward for improving. Income tax is out-and-out government thievery. The reward for doing well is to pay MORE tax, not less. But in the end, people will like a Carbon Tax if it means they get to keep more of their money than they do right now. If it means they pay more tax, they'll hate it. It's the amount, not the form, of taxation that'll be most important to voters.

Welll, in Canada what would happen is, after it served it's purpose, real or imagined, it would be kept around as a cash cow. However, inevitably industry would get a break from it and it will be shouldered by the end user..us.

Think it won't happen? Ontario is already planning on taxing us on power consumption come July 1 2010 ( a nice birthday present), not just the service to provide it. Global warming or not, that tax will be here to stay.

Actually, I give Harper credit more than other politicians for saying it like it is. He doesn't quite have the gumption to come out and say that he thinks global warming is a pile of crap, but in comparison to others he's actually been pretty good at being forthright.

I wish he did have the guts to come out and say it. It would make a nice clear split and we could move the debate to a more honest realm.

I agree. It's obvious he thinks it's a load of shit but if Obama is playing politics with the issue it makes sense for Harper to do the same.

Personally, I am sick and tired of waiting to see what the fuck the US says and does. I am pretty sure we can make our own decisions, unfortunately, those that can are the tax payers not the idiots that are running our governments. that includes all parties. I would appreciate a politician that isnt so PC, I want to hear their honest beliefs, regardless of what I believe in.
