Sure, I've heard of those folks, but most people in Detroit haven't. Winning a championship doesn't make a "hockey town"...Tampa Bay won a cup. Dallas won a cup. I lived in Boston for the better part of 4 hockey seasons. Boston is an original 6 town. Boston is not a hockey market.

The biggest problem with the Leafs is the Harold Ballard syndrome which still prevails with the Leafs. You could ice a Junior C hockey team as the Leafs and Air Canada would still sell out... Which informs me the Leaf fans know squat about hockey....
I already told you, Leafs' fans don't attend the games. They can't afford to. The tickets are owned by corporations and are traded for favours.
