Anything that brings fairer representation is good but lets also not forget it will cost the taxpayer hundreads of thousands of dollars per new candidate.

This is true but adding seats was probably thought of as less contentious than removing some.

One obvious loser in any parliamentary reform would be the Bloc Québécois, which seems to be in permanent possession of about 50 seats, delivered by Quebec voters who prefer to have a sovereigntist voice representing them in the House of Commons.

But the province isn't growing, and may even be on the cusp of population decline. Expanding the size of the House of Commons would weaken the influence of Quebec's voice in Parliament and the Bloc along with it.

Sounds good to me!

And while the West gets more seats, I'd bet that the inner city ridings will be re-drawn too (like they did last time, changing my riding from an urban one to a suburban one), which will provide opportunities for other parties to get seats.

Oh big surprise!

If you look at the data you will this realignment will leave Quebec with the largest ratio of population/seats, 96,500 compared to the national average of 86,977. Obviously Duceppe will attempt to exploit that. Fine, his prerogative. But since both the Libs and Dips are both anxious to increase their number of Quebec seats I can see them agreeing to a few more Quebec seats as part of the overall change.

This will end the dominance of the seperatists and stop our politicians from having to pander to the whiney Quebecios to form a majority. About bloody time.

If they're going to go to all the trouble of reshaping it why not also give it a thorough cleaning. Seems kinda dirty these days. Fresh paint and faces would give it new life.

Looks like they noticed..

The Harper government would face a public outcry from Quebecers that could threaten national unity if it goes ahead with a plan to increase the electoral clout of voters in Ontario and Western Canada, warn seasoned political observers and politicians.

"It's clear that, when the population increases in a province, there must be a change in the distribution of seats, but we must also maintain a good balance with Quebec," said Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff at a news conference yesterday. "We cannot play partisan games with this, because it (concerns) national unity of the country."

He added that Quebec's weight in the Canadian federation "must always be respected."

Thanks for posting that rr.

$1:
Benoît Pelletier, a former Quebec Intergovernmental Affairs Minister who now teaches law at the University of Ottawa, said that some changes might be inevitable in the future because the 1982 Constitution requires proportional representation in the House of Commons. But he also said that any proposed change to weaken Quebec's voice in Parliament could favour the Bloc the next time Quebecers go to the polls.

Perhaps the next Federal election should only be held in Quebec. That way they can be the only voice. The rest of us will just sit quietly and wait for the new borders to be drawn when Quebec votes to go their own way.

Typical Iggyism. On the one hand we must do this; on the other hand we must do that.

Now, tell me Mr Ig. Do you support the additional seats for ON, AB and BC or not? This time without the academic puffery, please.

Good news, eventually the bloc will no longer be able to hold Canada by the jimmies. We can start running the country again at some point.

Although Iggy disagrees with that, no suprise.

"I'm convinced there will be a public outcry in Quebec over the Conservative proposal," said Paquette. "For us this is a major issue, and I think it shows once again that the Conservatives have crossed out (appealing to voters in) Quebec."

Bullshit, first off everything is a major issue with Quebec and if anything, Quebec has crossed out Harper over fickle shit and he knows it. With insane voters like that whats the point of trying anymore.

But looks like he's trying a different way
