Zipperfish Zipperfish: When I was a kid it the line "God keep outr land" was actually "O Canada." The God thing was not part of heritage, it was put in their by religous conservatives. Indoctrination 101, I guess. anyways I try to mix it up a bit by singing "Satan keep our land..." o0r "FSm keep our land..." I'm all about religious equality! Actually Roger Doucet gets the credit for that god line I have been told Zip (Habs famous anthem singer from the 70's)

PENATRATOR PENATRATOR: Brenda Brenda: $1: Board staff explained that it might be a violation of religious freedom Although I do not agree with singing (or hearing) the Anthem daily, I would not want to hear the Netherlands anthem either, unless I was a citizen I am, and I don't want to hear it daily. It's hideous Seriously tho, it has nothing to do with me being an immigrant or not. I think it should be taught, but not over do it. It should stay special, not just another chore.

My 4 year old's favorite part of his school day is standing for the anthem, and he is SUPER pissed on the nights TSN or CBC don't show the anthem before puckdrop, while only 4, he is a proud Canadian, and in my opinion, pride in this country is not being taught to our youth. That and the ridiculous immigration attitudes we have. (DISCLAIMER, I have no probs with immigration and people remembering where they came from, but if you want to live here, you need to learn to be Canadian) (no this is not directed at a certain Dutch immigrant who posts here regularily heheh)

Don't ever use it against me! I agree with you tho. Immigrants should adapt. Learn the language, the way people treat eachother (which is VERY different from what I am used to, and not always in a good way), deal with the cultural differences, and don't expect a break for every mistake you make. Hell, you can't break the law in your former country without being punished, why would you be able to do it here?

The Americans do a much better job than we do in instilling patriotism in their kids than we do. They get the trappings in school - flag, pledge of allegiance, national anthem.
Here we seem to be more worried about someone complaining that the signing of the national anthem violates his kid's "human rights".

Jeez they were using "We Stand on Guard for Thee" way too many times in the original. Plus, the French lyrics always referred to the Cross, anyway.

Yes, and it is run by the government. No there is not. Homeschooling or even UNschooling is not "attend a schoolbuilding and listen to the anthem every morning"

$1: the moment we bend over to immigrants (excluding Brenda and those like her) and religious groups about it because of thier opinions You know what I do not understand? How the hell you get it in your mind to even complain about something like this, especially as an immigrant. If the school my kids attend would change the morning session and play the anthem every day, so be it. Who the hell am I to complain? I might not agree with it, but thats life.

Brenda Brenda: ROTFL . Hell, you can't break the law in your former country without being punished, why would you be able to do it here? Because this is Canada, if we prosecute you (not you personally), or the Police even speak to you in a stern tone, it's racial profiling, discrimination ect ect, a whole hockey sock full of defense lawyers are just licking their chops to take that to the supremem court and make a name for themselves.

All those that are offended should have to step out into the hallway. That's what we made the JWs do when we said the Lord's prayer in school.

I dont really care either way, but I am of the same thought as Brenda, keep the anthem for special occasions. Even with as much indoctrination as the americans do with their anthem many still dont know all the words to it.
