So what got people up in arms over this anyways?
The original assignment that Obama was asking them to do which was "what can you do to help your president". I agree that title smacks of dictatorship type worship, not extreme but the undertones are there. Is it worth all the commotion not really. The problem is the right started complaining about the fact that he is addressing the students at all even though past presidents have all done it.
"Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Führer!"I would think that Obama would be smarter than to open himself up to the obvious association his comment brings to mind. I guess I was wrong.
But I'd say that this is probably not too far from the target. Given that Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has stated that people who swear an oath to the Constitution pose some sort of threat to the country (because they place allegiance to the law of the land above allegiance to a person) I'm going to say that Obama's comment is consistent with the mindset of the people surrounding him.
Obedience to a leader is more important than allegiance to one's nation with these folks or else they would not view soldiers, sailors, patriots, and Constitutionalists as clear and present dangers to national security.
I obey my President because it is the right thing to do. I obey my President because I trust him to act in the best interests of my country. The Obama crowd takes deep umbrage at the second comment and they consider people who say this to be a threat to the nation. What they want is for people to say and believe the first comment. Frankly, I find THAT to be a threat to my nation.
