Was in Levis Quebec a few weeks back and they have a beautiful bike/running/walking/roller blade path along the river and where ever an access to businesses etc on the other side of the path occurs, there is a four way stop (or rather arrete :) ). They ignore THOSE signs, that are there specifically for their own protection!

There are some jurisdictions in the USA that allow the cyclist to yield on a stop sign with some favorable results.

Theyre using the road - why wouldnt they?

These motorists are using the roads, too. Why wouldn't they stop?

Well that saves me time on lexum.umontreal.ca

What I liked most about the case was that some uppity cyclist got it stuck to him ALL the way. It's the only solace most of us have when some jack-off cyclist parades himself into the left-hand turn lane expecting us to respect him as a proper vehicle, only to have him pop through the red-light because it was expedient for him to do so as a bicycle.

If I ever have the good fortune to see a bicyclist pulled over by the police I'm going to yell out my car window that he's got weed in his handlebars.

My statement was in response to the title of the thread/story....

We all know there are idiots on EVERY side - Ive seen cyclists blow thru red lights on busy thoroughfares, motorcyclists drive down the solid yellow line in bumper to bumper traffic and motorists rolling thru stop signs...

But thats not what this thread is discussing is it?

Do you really consider these motorists as idiots? I don't. I am not outraged about this video.

Rolling through a stop sign is very common for an experienced driver.

However, I have no doubt that many people would be outraged if it were a video of 96% cyclists.

that jack off cyclist deserves the same rights and courtesy that you would offer to a farm tractor or any other slow moving vehicle.

And, just like the pedestrian that jay walks,a cyclist that blows a red light is breaking the law.

go ahead and get mad, but spare me the rants about hoping to see the guy dead under the front tire of a vehicle. Any rational human should not be talking that way

Edit: ( ps I'll note that you didn't write anything about dead cyclists, its just that I wanted to finish my string of thoughts that were started by your post)

Of course they should! It's a no brainer!

That said... I was riding my motorbike today (damn, was it hot...) and, in a dead town on a Sunday (well almost, everything was closed though), I noticed I ignored EVERY stopsign, except for the traffic lights... (I slowed down, but never came to a full stop...)
YES, we should all obey the rules of the road, but DO we really?

There's rules and there's common sense. If a guy rolls a stop sign and enters the intersection safely, there's no problem. When a guy comes to a complete stop, then pulls in to the intersection and makes someone else brake or steer, then that's not a correct stop. If I burn a red-light at 2:00am, with no other cars within 10kms, what's the problem? The rules of the road are there to try and make safe, smoothe traffic flow. When a cyclist or a motorists disobeys the rules of the road SAFELY, it shouldn't be a reason for anyone to get their knickers in a twist.

Well THERES a contradiction in terms

I guess the difference MIGHT be the blatant disregard that some cyclists have for the rules of the road. As I mentioned I live on a road that has several four ways and Ive seen them blow thru without even a GLANCE either way, almost DARING motorists to pull out in front of them (which I almost did)

The bottom line is that if you USE the road then obey the rules - that being said I wonder what the percentage of tickets handed out to cyclists compares to those handed out to motorists

Youre painting this as tho I believe that one is less severe than the other.

Wrong

I apreciate what you are saying, and would tend to want to agree with you on most of it, most of the time.

However, I currently feel a need to address the ill attitude toward cyclists ( a group that includes all of us. You, me, and any one else that likes to take their bike out in sunny weather)

I don't have patience for prejudicial comments pointed towards all cyclists in general just because there are some ( or many cyclists) that piss you off on a daily basis while you are driving.

I thank you for being objective enough to clarify any painting that I've done. It's hard to consistently share and or vent my thoughts without some of it sounding like its directed at you. Please accept my apologies.

When I was still a teenager, I used to ride my bike to my friend's house alla time.
The road had freakin stop signs every freakin block. At night especially I wouldn't stop. I'd crook my ear for car noises and look for headlight beams and sail on through. Mainly because I also had no brakes lol. Well one night I didn't hear the car or see any lights because he forgot to turn em on. I sailed through the stop sign, smacked into his front quarter panel and proceeded to launch across his hood and about 20 feet down the road. Surprisingly I wasn't hurt, just some minor cuts and abrasions. I quit blowing through stop signs after that tho. So I guess in response to the question, YES, unless you wanna hit or get hit by a car.
