That's exactly MY point. If you're in class or at work, you shouldn't be chatting with your friends.

Lemmy Lemmy: DrCaleb DrCaleb: I disagree. It's technology that is just used incorrectly.
I manage several hundred servers; each having many moving parts that overheat, seize, jam, or generally discombobulate. When they have a problem, they page or email me. This I believe is a very useful application of this technology.
When my cousin texts me, and therefore takes 5 minutes to say "Hi, what are you doing?" - that is a waste of time. Phone me. If I'm not busy, I'll pick up the phone. If I am, leave a message and I'll get back to you. An hours verbal conversation would be weeks worth of texting.
Life is too short for humans to communicate via SMS. Great, I'm glad it's working productively for you. My observation is that texting is creating more problems for our society, especially among our youth, than its worth. Hey, guns have uses when used correctly too, but both, I'd argue, are net "failures" by objective cost-benefit analysis. On that we agree. My servers text me. I don't text them back. And they don't text me, except during specified hours. As for Tricks above ^^. Yup, agreed too. You are in class, or you are not in class. There is no 'sort of' in class when you aren't texting. Don't you find people walking out in the middle of a conversation with them to be rude?

Some read the newspaper, some use their laptop and send emails or look at nude pictures of their friends girlfriend. Whatever. There's always distractions in class, whether it be some girls jugs or your Blackberry. Our distractions have just changed as technology has.

Tricks Tricks: Choban Choban: don't text me to just say hi, if you want to chat then p/u the phone. Can't answer in class/at work. Can text though. In class your supposed to be doing school work, not chatting with a friend on a cell phone, personally I'd like to see them banned from schools. As far as work goes, I got time to chat some times (obviously as I'm online right now). If I was a parent paying for my kids university I'd be pissed if they were texting in class, tell you what, every generation before Texting came out made out just fine socially.

If I was a prof. I'd fail anyone texting during a lecture on the justification the they could be cheating.

I'm shocked that they needed a study to determine what obviously should be common sense. What a waste of time and fucking money

I give my classes my expectations on the first day of the semester. Don't bring cellphones to class is a simple request. If I see them, I'll ask that student to leave. Once I ask someone to leave, they need to see me, in person, before I'll allow them to return. If they don't like my rules, they can find another class. If you want to chat with friends, go to the coffee shop or pub. If you want to listen to me talk about economics, then show me the courtesy to respect my classroom expectations or fuck off. If other professors don't care if people text in class, then that's up to them. In my world, they're not welcomed.
