bootlegga bootlegga:
I think what this shows is that no matter who's in the Oval Office, you're going to wind up with one or two tools in Cabinet positions.

Agreed, but the Obamamaniacs promised "change you can believe in" and now as Canadians we can see what that change is.

The big difference is, if McCain won and Homeland Security was run by someone as incompetent and stupid as her you would be having a melt-down. But because it's Obamas people you go "oh well it was going to happen anyway".

Where's your righteous indignation over her stereotyping of veterans or her accusation of 9/11 terrorists coming into the US from Canada?

Your silence over this is deafening.

She didn't have to apologise. The report didn't single out verterans like some nutters said it did.

so veterans are nutters?

I'm actually referring to the Sean Hannity types who read that part of the report and thought that verterans were being singled out when in fact, the report wasn't doing that at all. The report merely said that returning veterans were recruiting targets of extremist groups and nothing more.

Which, in part, questions their loyalty as soldiers and citizens of the United States of America. It was an extremely stupid thing to say, or write down on a piece of paper, since basically you're telling every law enforcement agency in the United States to watch out for those crazy war veterans.

Just curious. If a report was released saying that law enforcement agencies should watch out for "young, Muslim males" to try to weed out terrorism, would that be just as grand? I mean sure, they're recruiting targets for Islamic terrorist groups, after all.

Which is singling them out, making direct reference to a specific group.

That would be true if then entirety of the report was focused only on returning veterans as targets of recuitment for extremist groups. But it's not. The report addresses other groups likely to join extremist groups in the US.

There is precedent for it as well. Timothy McVeigh was a Gulf War vet.

Awesome. The 19 9-11 highjackers were Arab Muslims. So was the 93 WTC bombing. So therefore it's fine for agencies to profile Muslims? Or Arabs (to be more broad).

The report was extremely broad, and not specific at all. If I remember correctly, they weren't able to name one active right wing extremist group.

Here's the section in questiom from the offical report:

$1:
Disgruntled Military Veterans

DHS/I&A assesses that rightwing extremists will attempt to recruit and
radicalize returning veterans in order to exploit their skills and knowledge derived from military training and combat. These skills and knowledge have the potential to boost the capabilities of extremists—including lone wolves or small terrorist cells—to carry out violence. The willingness of a small percentage of military personnel to join extremist groups during the 1990s because they were disgruntled, disillusioned, or suffering from the psychological effects of war is being replicated today.
— After Operation Desert Shield/Storm in 1990-1991, some returning military
veterans—including Timothy McVeigh—joined or associated with rightwing
extremist groups.
— A prominent civil rights organization reported in 2006 that “large numbers
of potentially violent neo-Nazis, skinheads, and other white supremacists are now
learning the art of warfare in the [U.S.] armed forces.”
— The FBI noted in a 2008 report on the white supremacist movement
that some returning military veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have
joined extremist groups.

This is an intelligence report, right? Personally I appreciate an intelligence report that isn't politically correct. Maybe it shouldn't have been declassified. Reminds of that old Jack Nicholson line "You can't handle the truth."
