Mr_Canada Mr_Canada:
I have no faith in the things happening on April Fools Day. I've lost money on
bullshit, and I'm not going to get fooled by some slimy company like Norton.

Everything on my computer is running 100% fine. My Non-Norton Anti-Virus programs,
Firewall, Scanners, etc and everything.

Norton's got dick all to do with causing this.
It's a virus dude.
I think Norton put out a half a million dollar reward for anyone who can fix this.

ziggy ziggy:
I love these guy's with mac's that think their invulnerable to a virus.

hahahahahahahaha [B-o]

Now maybe if some people actually used Mac's their would be a reason to write a virus for one,but they are out there.

I dont claim to be completely invulnerable to viruses, but I dont need to spend money on anti-virus software for the thousands I can get with a PC. MAC is more secure because unix is more secure so its harder to write viruses for.

Plus your logic about the number of users is absurd. You are basically saying that you would rather use a PC because then you are considered important enough for someone to write a virus for you to catch. Have fun with that and let me know how it works for you.

You and I must have the same sense of ha-ha Regina. [B-o]

Is the virus an April Fools joke or is it real?
Almost Y2Kish.

It appears to have "April 1" as an important date in it's code, but no one knows what it will do.

25% on 'Nothing'. 25% on 'Joke'. 50% on 'new spam botnet'.

Well if they have a copy of this virus, surely them must have ran it on a closed system to see what it would do wouldn't they?

They have put it in a 'clean room' to see what it does. Firstly, it loads the http headers from known websites to see if you changed the computer clock to see if you could fake it out. And, they can't.

Second, it loads random URLs, that somehow all 10 million copies know at he same time, of a possible 50,000 generated daily. It then goes to that website and awaits further instructions. (no one can guess the algorithm to do this) All the author has to do is register that URL and put further instructions up. Which is what happened twice already with previous 'activation' dates.

As far as programming goes, it is one sophisticated bastard. Whoever wrote it should be doing honest work, because they are brilliant programmers.

http://kingofgng.com/eng/2009/03/16/con ... an-update/

Right now, the 'clean room' virus does absolutely nothing. Tomorrow, the 'payload' could be delivered to 10 million infected PCs and then . . . . ?

Yeah if I hadn't wasted my money on a completely useless Macbook, I wouldn't be missing out on all the fun.

I had a dozen idiots call my shop to ask what they could do to be prepared for tomorrow. Told a couple to go to the bank machine and get $200 now so they could bring their computers and be first in line tomorrow....

No,I just find it funny how mac users think their invulnerable to viruses when their not. They like to brag it up when a new one come's out but there's code written for mac users also.
Now if the majority of peeps used macs then I'm sure there would be more code written to compromise such systems.

You know the saying....build it and they will come.
I havent got any baddy's for at least 5 years so I'm not too worried about the "superiority" of mac's as it hasnt proven itself superior to me yet.
I use what works and works best without any hassles.

If you parked a BMW and a VW bug on the same street which one do you think more peeps would be interestet in stealing?

If I knew the BMW ran on Vista I would take the VW Bug. Plus I think Macs make superior laptops for the average user then any PC. The biggest difference I notice and appreciate is battery life. I get almost twice the battery life on my mac then I did on my HP that I owned before this.

ziggy this stuff is quite serious my wife also never had any problem with virus for more than 7 years with her computer. She is very careful and she had a very good non-free antivirus. She does allot of banking, and Paypal with her computer because she sell a lot of stuff online.

Then one morning she find out that she is already log on to msn, yahoo and aim. Further analysis from Me, i Found out that her own computer is sending information to a remote FTP server!

Well gues what, we had to cancel all the bank and credit card flag Equifax and change all her online password from a secure computer (Linux live cd)

After that I had to backup her 4 outlook express account and contact to transfer them later to mozilla thunderbird. Luckily for her I had Backup all her stuff on my Linux Computer 2 week before. It took 3 days before her anti-virus finally knew about the threat and even then it was unable to fix it or to stop the data transfer or the constant USB key infection. I also notice that my USB key was also infected with a hidden (For a windows computer) autorun.bat. Witch mean that if she had gone too a "ordinary" computer shop they would also had been infected!

Now she is using Mandriva Linux 2009 with KDE 4.1.3 and she is not going back to windows! 8)

I'm sure it's serious but you have to be smart on the net.
If someone wants to hack your linux box they will.
When they get as widespread as windows i'm sure there will be more malicious code for them.

For this worm all you have to do is make sure your anti virus is up to date and your windows is also updated,if people cant be bothered to do that then they get what they deserve.

I'm just wondering, are there rules on April Fools jokes?

Like suppose this was an April Fools joke, as was suggested earlier. I'm not suggesting it is, just what if it was. Have the perpetrators broken some kind of unwritten law by setting the joke up before the day. Would it create a backlash of anger you wouldn't expect if they had played by the rules? Could the vendors be sued?

In fact even if the joke was done properly (fantasizing that it could be a joke), could the vendors be sued? Has anybody ever been sued for an April Fools joke, I wonder.

Okay, outside of being a memory hog (bad, but meh, survivable) what's wrong with Vista?

She is smart on the net and if you ever go to a "secure site" that has been victim of a DNS hack you would not stand a chance. because the address would be OK and even the HTTPS would be there. A simple keylogger type of malware and all the info that you type in your browser goes to a Russian Hacker.

BTW if they want to Hack my Linux box they sure can try  first they will have to find an open port but the firewall that come standard with Mandriva detect port scanning and then ban the IP. So yes indeed they can try....

On a second not for conficker C if your computer is already infected you WONT be able to update your OS an your antivirus because it's block access to those DNS. So you would have to manually updated with a "clean" computer by transferring data over a network or USB key.

http://www.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/virus.aspx?id=77976

And then you could very well compromise your network or you could even infect the "clean" PC with your now infected USB Key.

And that part of your comment is just untrue

Because if you are hit by a threat that has not yet been detected or counter either by Microsoft or your Anti-virus Program. You will end up in exactly in the same situation that my wife found herself 3 week ago along the thousand or hundred of thousand other Windows user.

I just found it to be a slow and clumsy operating system. I guess unrefined would be the best way to put it. I just did not enjoy using it, bad user experience i guess. And the whole questioning me everytime I clicked on something drove me up the wall.

I just found that MAC OS X is easier to use and works better, plus it provides me with security without paying for anti-virus software.

I do all my banking online and one of the ways to see if your infected is to TRY and do a virus or windows update.

Mines all set up automatic and sometimes it's online for weeks at a time and ive never had a problem.

I also check the url's of my trusted sites.
