Lemmy Lemmy:
Eisensapper Eisensapper:
You can imprison them for 15 months for not following their contract and abandoning their country in a time of war.

Yeah, of course, the military needs some different rules, but it seems a little silly to tell a kid that made a mistake that he's going to prison because he regrets his career choice. Hell, I regret a BUNCH of my choices when I was young punk. It's not like he's of any further use to the US military anyway. It'd be kind of like telling a hockey player that blows out his knee that he has to play out the rest of his contract even though he can't skate anymore. But, again, I understand the military-way of thinking about these cases too.

So then suddenly you have 5 or 10 000 US soldiers laying down their weapons saying "whoops, I made a mistake" because they face no reprucussions. Hmmmmm
Sorry, the Military is different for a reason, I don't expect you to understand or even agree if you have not served in it.

(it's a her, by the way)

What part of contract don't you get?
I can assure you the cost of her training is far and beyond the price of the remainder of her term.

There are however plenty of stories of people deserting after already doing a tour.

Well if they go off and fight, and come back with an real objection to war, they should be able to apply for and get conscientious objector status, unless I'm mistaken.

If they legitimately have been diagnosed with an OSI then they should not be forced to go, that is just putting his life and the life of others at risk. With that said one of the reasons they are extending tours is likely partially due to cowards running away. The States doesn't treat their soldiers half as well as Canadians, that is plainly easy to see, but that should not be our concern. They are criminals who have broken the law; we should not be a haven for them.

I did miss it saying she had done a tour 3 years ago, but that still does not give her a valid excuse to desert.

I would argue that 5 or 10 or 200,000 US soldiers laying down their weapons would be a GREAT thing for humanity.

I'll remind you of that the next time the military is called out for disaster relief...

It was the Bush administration that called their military to war, they are the ones with most of the karma debt.

Eisensapper Eisensapper:
I havent heard of single story where any of them are being forced to do multiple tours. All the cases I have heard of are from cowards who signed up to get free schooling or an easy paycheck, but when it came time to go to Iraq they tucked tail.

I don't disagree with you but did you read the article? She has already served a tour in Iraq.

A country may be a democracy. It might be free and guarantee rights to its citizens. Armies do not. They are not a democracy. Armies by nature are 100% fascist/totalitarian. When you sign up you don't enter into an 'agreement', you make a pledge the likes of which are not readily found in the modern world.

Just curious, are you speaking about the soldiers in combat, or after they come home. I won't deny that there has been horrible fuck ups with the VA hospitals, but I'm curious to your examples as well.

I agree. I think people who object to the war and/or deployment should stay and fight it. I just wanted to show that a lot of the deserters are vets refusing to go back rather then all first timers getting a free education then refusing to honour their military commitment one way or another.
