CanadianJeff CanadianJeff:
you know for 10 billion Canada could easily start it's own auto business in Ontario to hire all those workers. Can anyone say cars made for winter?

Franky I'd love to see some cars made that are more tailored to working in -40c or -50c

90% of Canadians don't get those weather conditions.

Green urban commuters that can be exported beyond the USA and would generate and utilize Made In Canada green technologies would be a better idea I think.

quite possibly so. Either way our government are idiots if they give them that much cash. We'd be better off finding those workers new jobs then spending that much to try and keep them afloat.

The deferred taxes, these and other corporate parasites got(back in the 70s, 80s and early90s) were supposed to be paid back too, but that didn't happen. They laid off workers and still got the status. All of that money could have gone a long way to dealing with deficits.

Exactly. Who really believes this will be paid back in the future?

To hell with this. Your company is so screwed you need this much of a bailout to stay afloat? Goodbye and good riddance.

As an ex-pat Brit, this looks very like what happened to the UK motor industry. It died in a very long and tax-payer subsidised manner and the same will probably happen in North America.

For too long the 'Big Three' have been making a product that less and less people actually want.
Auto workers are usually uneducated and are paid better than paramedics. As a consequence, we pay inflated prices for the products that GM et al make.

The whole sad mess was summed up when the heads of these badly run companies flew to Washington to beg for public money, in their corporate jets. Talk about fiddling while Rome burns.

Toyota and Honda can make competive products in Canada that sell well in Canada. Why can't the "Big Three"?

UAW and CAW and crap management. Both sides are to blame IMHO. I stopped buying 'domestic' cars after my experiences with the dismal quality of GM and Chrysler products and Ford just don't make a car I want.

GM wants $7B, and they want to lay off 7000. Why not just give those 7000 $1M each? That's what it works out to.

Canada has bought out $75B in mortgages, is projecting $80B in deficits over the next two years, and now these schmucks come, hat in hand, for another $10B. Jesus. Why not just give every man, woman, and child in this country $5500? That's what it fucking works out to.

They'll just spend it on beer and popcorn.
