The Bermeja Island doesn't seem to have been a very large Island and a much smaller blast could have been sufficient. The Mexican governments over the years have been very corrupt and it's possible there was some sort of cover up from within the Mexican government. Money can make a lot of things disappear. I have read it is 80 km2. It's small but it's still 9x9 km.

Btw, you can't hide a nuclear explosion. Even if it's small.
