Btw... A concussion doesn't (necessarily) "destroy" someones life. That is a little exagerated.

Oh, how many people do you know with serious head injuries: concussion, subdural hemotoma, bleeding, axonal injury etc.?

Lots of drivers, bikers, children, elderly, you know, like... PEOPLE in life?

Hit your head hard, fall from a swingset, get drunk, and fall flat on your face, car accidents...

come on girl, broaden your world. EVERYBODY I know had a concussion once or twice (or more...) in their lifes. They are all still alive, with little to no issues that come from that.

I can say for myself, I play hockey, I have sustained more concussions off ice than on ice...only one on ice and that was my stupidity of not strapping down the helmet. Fractured my skull twice...resulting in surgery in the US. I have a higher chance in day to day living to get a concussion than I do on ice.

Zipperfish Zipperfish:
Hockey fights are already banned. If you get into a fight you go to the box for five minutes and feel shame.

Pretty funny! I think the point is that what happens in the hockey arena would lead to a serious assault charge on the street and has in a few cases happened in the arena. Anyone who has been around a hospital has seen some pretty bashed in people. I remember seeing one who looked as if the whole side of his head was caved in. He could barely speak or communicate and was barely mobile and yet he was in his thirties. I would not wish that on anyone.

Most of the hockey players who have died during a game, the cause was head injury.
It is an avoidable injury and those that do not die have short term and long term memory loss, slow processing, poor decision making, no multitasking, no initiation, no social skills, and need 24/7 supervision for the rest of their life. To prove it, all you need to do is google: the results or consequences of head and brain injury for the individual.

Oh for the love of freakin' pete...

Will common sense ever prevail?

As previously mentioned - when football and boxing are re-regulated in a way that eliminates concussions, hockey can take a look at it. Part of the reason they make the salaries they do is because it is a somewhat risky profession.

Also - I know of people who have tripped over their own feet, landed juuuuuuust right and given themself a concussion. Shit happens every day. Why must some people belly ache and bitch over every freakin' thing they can think of?

"parents need to be more aware"

As in parents of little children? Don't sound like fighting during Hockey to me, but more like falling... During skating, or playing, or skiing, or ... or ...

Why the uproar? They are only looking at trying to cut down on the preventable injuries such as those inflicted upon another player on purpose! No one is suggesting that players be wrapped in swaddling. If players want to fight then they can 'take it to the ring'. Why does fighting have to be part of hockey, or any other sport besides boxing etc. anyway?

My question would be, what is the percentage of concussions from fighting versus concussions from cheap shots to the head? I'm thinking the cheap shots far surpasses fights. When they ban fighting and concussions keep happening will we then ban checking? At that point you might as well watch figure skating.

There is a simple solution that will greatly reduce fighting in hockey...apply the minor hockey rules to junior, senior and professional leagues. It's simple, make any major penalty an automatic game misconduct and minimum one game suspension. I say you don't need to BAN fighting, just penalize it more appropriately. Take my suggestion and fighting, stick fouls and cheap shots will be GREATLY reduced.

If you want to talk about preventable injuries, how come the league refuses to look at icing? I bet there are a lot more players getting seriously hurt by going full speed to try to beat the icing than fighting. The day the league will look into that stupid icing crap, maybe I will consider changing the rules about fighting. I find fighting in hockey a lot more entertaining than 2 guys crashing in the boards, with the potential of breaking their neck, concussion, etc.

I understand that the concussion panel is looking for things to do now that Bush isn't around to drop bombs anymore. Not to mention the ourageous number of concussions due to viewers smacking themselves in the head for ever voting him in...
but the thought of banning fighting from hockey is as ridiculous as giving W another term.
Next thing you know the members of the board (of which i'm almost certain none have played any organized sport besides maybe nerf bowling) will have us playing with foam pucks.
Eliminating fighting will only result in different more violent ways of expressing one's anger and/or frustration.
I guess the short and sweet of it all is FRAG-OFF AND LEAVE OUR BEAUTIFUL SPORT ALONE!!
