How on earth did we get stuck with this smuck as our Pope? It was almost as if the old gaurd in the church railed against many of the liberal advances that Pope John Paul II had encouraged when they gave this guy the hat. The only positive thing I see with Benedict the XVI is that he's old and he won't be around long ... hopefully.



He's a place holder. They figure he'd be around 10 yrs tops, and then croak. During that time, they'd have time to observe some of the younger cardinals. It was also a small bone for the arch conservatives within the Church.

Ten years seems to be a pretty long time for a place holder, and an arch conservative will further erode the influence of the church even among its own adherents. If the pope no longer "sounds infalible" in his pronouncements, then he becomes less important and relevant to Catholics.

The thing is, Benny isn't infallible.
