I don't mean to be rude but aren't there minimum vision standards (as there are physical ones) that must be met to be in a given trade?

Yes you are right but there are several vision catagories V1 to V5, with V1 being no corrective lenses required all the way to damn near blind. In my job the worst you can be is a V4 and if you fall to a V5 you will face a career review board, in my case I would probably be released because I cant see the computer screen to do my job as it is, let alone if my vision got worse.

For most jobs in the combat arms, they wont even look at you if you are worse than a V2. If your vision gradually worsens over time but is still acceptable they will keep you because of the cost of training.

Which is why in some cases it is cheaper to correct vision than train a bunch of new people

V3 for the infantry. This is great news! Nothing worse than patroling around in -30 and your glasses start to fog up. Or wearing the lovely inserts in the blastic glasses, and lets not forget the gas mask insert too....

Or in sea state stupid with spray drenching you!

You'd think so but not everybody loses vision before they enter, there are things that can happen during training or combat that can cause vision lose.

Just a thought I had, see how this is extremely benefitial to people whos vision deteriorates over time. It means that the CF doesn't have to train new people. But will this program include those applying to a trade and turn out they dont have the vision for it?

For example Bloggins goes into the CFRC and passes all the tests for infantry except vision. Will the CF then accept him as infantry then zap his eyes for him? Seems like a real big investment for someone we just got.

While in Afghanistan we had a visit with a "unnamed" general and we brought the topic of laser eye surgery up. He said what these media reports were saying but went into more detail and we mentioned about guys trying to get in and what about guys that get in and get out right away. He replied that they were going to be looking at making sure you were on your CE at a minimum to get it done. Of course, this was by his word of mouth and about 8 months ago......

I never take what visiting officers say as the gospel, I was in Gundie Gar when we were told by Gen. Leslie that we would be getting the SWASM as well as the Campaign Star. He threw in a half dozen other empty promises as well.

Hey everyone, I am new here but very interested in this site.I have had Laser Eye surgery done also was a V -4.75 and -4.50 and one question. I was in the process of AVOT to Traffic Tech and this required a vision of 3 or better and I did this which cost me $3000 if mbrs had the surgery done previous like a year before or because of the military would they be reimbursed for it?

I doubt it, the military might make some consseion for cases like your's where it effected their numbers, but I have a feeling they won't do a thing.

When I did my tests to join the CF I had my choice of all 3 or 4 trades.
Until I took the vision test. I was V4 and it cut my choices to damn near none :x
It would have been good if laser surgery was more common back then. It was around but I hadn't heard of it. I don't think they had it in Canada at the time.
I don't think the CF should pay for new recruits, unless perhaps there is a clause saying if you quit the CF you have to repay the cost.
Definately worth getting done if you are going to join up because it is so much cheaper now than it used to be.
