Wada Wada:
It's rammed down your throats during basic.

which coincidently starts AFTER signing up. Their to young to drink responsibly but they are more than mature enough to sign their lives away for an illegal war. How noble...what honor. It seems even the Bush had a change of heart during his service, but ....that's different.

Its also "rammed down your throat" during your first meeting, while your going through evaluation and when you finnaly sign your contact basicly giving your life to the country.

In basic they just make it seem like a really good thing your going to war to kill the enemy. BTW the American army is NUTS about glorifing war, they also try and sneak in how you will go to god and all that bullshit.

With that asside I think its completely just that the Americans threw him in jail, and I hope its a military jail, not a civilian 'correctional facility' there is a huge difference. From what I heard this asshat joined up for the scholorship bonus and when he found out he was picked to go he jumped ship.

Give it a rest, what 18 year old does not drink? You're naive or gullible to think otherwise.

what about the fact that the war is unconstitutional. dont soldiers have to swear to uphold the constitution when they are sworn in? Since it is an illegal conflict, couldnt that be exploited so the guy can go free?

Well now that he's in jail for standing up for what he believes in, he must have total respect of all the toss-em-out crowd, eh? Even more of a role model now, like some guy called Cassius Clay I vaguely remember...
Thank God we have a gov't willing to expend the effort to make a political statement than one that would toss out the Salvadorean ex hitman drug dealer with all the tatoos...

Though I'm not sure about the US military, Canadian recruits have the ability to quit in basic.

Anyway, it's not up to them to decide if a 'war' is illegal or not. They decide the legality of the actions within that war, but the war is in the field of politics and diplomacy.

Mohamed Ali didn't run to another country and he spent 4 years in jail because of it. This coward did nothing but run away from his obligations and refuse to own up to breaking his word.

Cassius Clay was also drafted, he never signed on to the military, the running recuit signed on. It was only till he was told to go to war that he decided it was a unjust and immoral war and ran away.

Like I pointed out. The tattoed jerk is still dealing on the streets of Vancouver, but a good Tory ass-licking session is more important to some.
Repeat: what the guy did to the US military is no fucking concern of any Canadian. I guess anyone who flies a North Korean MiG over here and defects will get the same treatment and we'll return the plane too...

Is Canada now some refuse bin for untrustworthy cowards?
If we let in people who skip out on signed contracts, do we let in the Enron scammers also? After all, a contracts a contract and why should be care if it's military, business or even a social contract.

.. and since when do you care about getting drugs off the street? I thought you'd be happy to see more of that business, reguardless where it comes from.

Definately, why would we keep them here, what would be the point?
