I was waiting for an OS clearly superior to XP

ridenrain points it out clearly, the OS means nothing. How efficiently does it run the application? That's why Mac OWNS the desktop publishing and video sector. My comment was directed to those people so stuck on M$oft they won't look elsewhere, so resistant to change they won't upgrade their accounting software and take advantage of their normal change-out cycle.
My Xerox didn't have a driver for XP64. No driver was coming for 64bit. I bought a new one for $60,000 because I need it to do the job properly and I can now do things the competition can't.
At the same time, I've serviced dozens of systems for book-keepers and accountants who wouldn't shell out for software that was XP compatible, 6 1/2 years later. Still running Windows 98! With dying hard drives. Every one shrieking at how much it costs to recover data from dead hard drives.
So skip Vista if you want to. Just be aware the next version out will be more like Vista and less like XP. If you buy a laptop you WILL get Vista and discover it's more secure than XP and compatible with everything on that laptop.
