I'm not multiculturally sensitive enough to see this as anything more than revolting and barbaric. How does one allow this when women are supposed to be covered in public at all times? I can't help but conclude that this religion dosen't hold women as full and equal patners.

Just to correct something: genital mutilation is practiced in some parts of black africa independently of religion. There is none in North Africa (except southern Egypt) and generally none in the mediteranean part of the middle east. For the other countries I dunno but I assume so. And in Morocco and north west africa women are not covered, nor do we have tchador and "taliban fashion" of that sort, except for some individuals who are importing their "spiritual" revival from Arabia or Afghanistan


But I agree that it's revolting and savage (not even barbaric as barbarians are FREE ); and the worst is what you said: these "young" people are pawns of their extended families and communities. There is the whole problem of muslims.

Genital mutilation is very common in south east africa, starting from southern part of Egypt. In Lebanon and Syria: almost non existent. In the Gulf states, I would say maybe.

The problem we have in North africa is rarely physical violence, and mostly psychological harrasment, social pressure, emotionnal blackmail ("you destroyed family honor boohoohoo"). Physical violence against women was never the rule in NA. However ultra-conservatism and social conformism especially for women was, and in most parts (or scoial classes) is still there. Now what I've noticed is that north africans in the West are getting more conservative that those in their native countries. Their traditions there mixed with eastern traditions I guess.

@Brenda: strangely enough, the guys have the last word, i.e if they decide to marry any -kind- of woman. Extended family can't put pressure on men, it's mostly women who are under pressure. Men on the other hand are more obsessed about their "image". Most of them have weak personalities as it is the case in most conformist or ultra-conservative cultures. But I know of a lot of exceptions, for example on guy married a prostitute because he loved her. Nobody of his family could do anything to stop that (in North west africa). But in the Gulf States I believe, they have to bring an official virginity certificate O_O ...
